The highest dream of many entrepreneurs around the world is to enter the disputed club of so-called "unicorns . " Those are startups valued at $ 1 billion or more . The group includes established names in the technology sector, such as Uber, Airbnb and Dropbox. But while the most successful examples are Americans, it's not just the United States that can boast. This is what a new map developed by CB Insights shows.
According to the company, the global unicorn club now has 214 private companies . Collectively, this "startups royalty" is worth about $ 745 billion. Almost half of the group (106 companies) are not North American.
The number tends to grow. By 2014, 37 percent of all companies that made their first $ 1 billion assessment were from outside the United States. By 2015, that number has risen to 53% and, last year, increased again to 58%. In 2017, to date, 42 have joined the club (24 of them outside the US).

CB Insights has mapped out where these international startups are (click on the map below to enlarge it) . This year, non-US startups include Chinese unicorns such as Toutiao ($ 11 billion), Mobike ($ 3 billion), NIO ($ 2.9 billion) and e-shang Redwood ($ 2 billion); Germany's Otto Bock ($ 3.5 billion); and the first Maltese unicorn, VistaJet ($ 2.5 billion).
Overall, China has by far the largest number of unicorns outside the US - a total of 55. After the Chinese, come to India and the United Kingdom. Then the ranking of the unicorns gets more pulverized.
