The Lonely Spirit

In Yellowstone Park the most noticeable features are the staggering geysers and hot springs. Throughout Yellowstone you can also find alpine lakes, deep canyons, craggy peaks, and vast forests. Wandering the landscape you can see bison, elk, and bears and other animal life. Was it always this beautiful?

Well there's a legend which explains how it came to be. Yellowstone or even earth for that matter wasn't always lush and green and full of oceans. Before all that their was only dust for miles and miles all around the lonely globe. Yet all that could be heard with ears that were not around to hear was howling all around this lonely ball of dust. For their was the lonely Spirit of the Wind which could be heard howling all day and night. Only for no one to hear his howl. Only the dust which twirled in fright around this lonely ball of dirt. He yearned to not be lonely; for his howling to be ended.

One night the Spirit of the Wind howled, but this time not out of longing for something new. If one had ears to hear one might just yearn for the tranquility of the void once again. For their was not the peace there once was. The dust which once laid on the ground could be seen violently being whipped and spun around the ball of dirt. The howl turned into a vicious but yet helpless scream of anger which tormented the ball of dust. The dust started to become scorched and soon thereafter blackened. The Spirit of the Wind could not keep up forever and soon began to weep.

He weeped and weeped all day and all night. After crying for the longest of time he finally cleared his eyes of tears. To his amazement he sees that something was different. He looked up to see a bright, gleaming and cheerful face of a young woman gliding down from the sky above. She twinkled as the sun bounced off her face and her skin was as clear as a crystal. She cheerfully said "Father why so down? You have created me. Now you don't have to be lonely".They both laughed and jumped in delight . The Spirit of the Wind named his new daughter Water and then gave her rule over the dirt which made up the ball of dust. The Spirit of Water scattered the tears all over the ball of dust.

One day there was a rumble which filled the air. The ocean of tears began to bubble and then boil. Explosions began to fill the air as red heaps of fiery molten dirt began to fling from the ocean deep. Someone roared from down below " Why have you given my land to someone who can't rule with an iron hand like mine my father! I shall be the ruler of this land!". The ball of dust became a vision of hell, with molten rock and choking fumes. The Spirit of Wind demanded his daughter Water to flee to the skies. That was the last time they saw each other. Just like her father did before her she began to weep all day and night. As she did her brother Fire was kept at bay by her tears, but only to be forced to hide underneath the land he lay claim to. Overtime the spirit of the wind with the molding of his hands and with the tears of his daughter and the fiery rage of his son he creates life to help keep his mind off his lost daughter. This is how the earth came to be and why Yellowstone's water boils. This is why it rains and the wind blows and the ground shakes with fire.
