I would disagree. I understand your point of view, but lets set religion aside for a moment. Suppose tomorrow no marriages had legal recognition anymore. Suddenly if a dead-beat dad or mom left the family, who would step in to save the day? At least in the USA, it is the government. The government spends a lot of taxpayer dollars in these situations (jailing fatherless children, food stamps, etc), and if the balances continue to tip this direction, we could be in Greece's shoes, austerity measures and all. Every child deserves loving parents, and marriage is a way to safeguard that. It is a public commitment to faithfulness, and without it I believe society will crumble.
