Masking of Identities is the New Fame.

in #writing8 years ago (edited)

Conventional fame requires either nice legs, cute faces, social interactions, and media appearances. Sometimes coupled with very good brains. However, fame has changed over the course of time.

Influential Author- Elena Ferrante

Elena Ferrante, an author who values her anonymity, has become an international phenomenon with her four novels set in Naples. Ferrante is also named one of the 100 most influential person on the planet by Time magazine (2016).

Ferrante is one author that insist that completed books would reach out to the world and have no need of their authors. Knowing the identity of the author may, in fact, changed the understanding of the work.

Ferrante remains in shadow even after Nobel Prize in Literature nomination- in which the real identity of the nominees has to be revealed to be eligible for a win.

Revolutionary Bitcoin Inventor- Satoshi Nakamoto

In a similar way, bitcoin inventor, Satoshi Nakamoto, chooses to stay mysterious despite a prize nomination in Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. This award is generally regarded as the most prestigious award in the realm of Nobel Prize awards.

Nakamoto's invention is nothing short of revolutionary, and I believe that the invention alone is already a prize award to him.

Not only has Nakamoto revolutionized the International Finance system, but he has also taught the world lessons on the importance of the open blockchain technology in combating governments' corruptions.

Elusive Street Artist- Banksy

Banksy is an anti-establishment street artist who kept his identity closely guarded. By creating this air of mystery has helped him to become one of the most successful artists in this era, with fans throughout the world.

Banksy rose to fame with his graffiti on public walls, often with a topical political message. His artistic images have become so popular that some property owners had chosen to retain his work on their walls rather than wash them off.

Criminologists at Queen Mary University of London have "tagged" Banksy using highly sophisticated geographic profiling according to the locations of his street artworks- a technique reserved for catching serial criminals.

Secretive Producer- Daft Punk

[edited; thanks to @killuminatic for correction]

Daft Punk’s secretive stage presence began as early as the 90s. They wore black bags over their heads during performances and then moved on to futuristic robot-head helmets. While their identity is 'known', their faces were never revealed.

Daft Punk had been nominated 40 times and won 12 awards, including the Grammy's. They did not allow these awards to have their heads swell and kept their helmets on.

Anonymity and Mysteriousness Takes Center Stage

There have been a curious obsession from the public to want to unmask these mysterious people. Perhaps a revelation to their real identities or faces may not be a good thing. Killing the suspense would likely distort the public's impression of their creations.

For many, fame appeal only if it is a conventional coveted one (i.e. Hollywood's fame). However, IMHO, anonymous fame has its special appeal that far exceeds that of the conventional- no restriction of imagination for the public.

Great! But Daft Punk, they are not singers but music producers and DJ. Anyways, do check out this amazing band from Romania called Carla's Dreams . They too masked themselves with face paint and insanely popular from where they are from.

Thanks! I've edited & credited you for pointing that out!
Steem on!
