The Bar and the Hamster Head

I crept through the front door, a couple of people gathering at the bar to order their drinks, but by the looks of it, the night was still young. I heard the raised voices of guys talking loudly towards the back, but no one was at the dance floor, just a couple of costumers in the back booths on the phone, and a rather large fellow at the bar. I walked freely, no one paying attention to me, and with a purpose, I walked to the bar.

"Hey, are you new here?" The bartender asked.

"Yeah, what do you have on tap?"

"Well, our beers, bottled drinks list is on the board. The liquor is over there. What kind of beer do you like?" The man asked.

"Oh, I like the Dark, the Robust Porter, or the porter. But I have to have a beer, so medium light ale. It is almost finished, I'll have another in a second."

The bartender gave me my beer, and I took it to a stool at the bar, and sat to enjoy the music playing.

A young lad walked in with a large woman, and they headed to a table. I seemed to have caught the eye of the large fellow at the bar, who was looking at the door, watching me. I looked around, but there was no one else in the place.

I took the glass to my lips, and felt the tap tap tap on my shoulder.

"I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but notice you." The large fellow turned around, and came to the seat next to me.

"I wasn't bothering you, was I?" I said with a smile, and turned back to the music.

"No, it was me bothering you. You see... I noticed you had a small hamster head." He said.

"Yeah, it's kind of a curse." I said, and bit my lip.

"No, hamster. I didn't think it possible, but I love hamsters." He said, and stared at me.

"Really? They are cute, but they are a curse. It's a long story..." I said.

"I am all ears, but I will have to pay, then." He said, and bought the next round.

I took a hasty sip, and told the story of how I came to be the hamster-headed one.

"I don't mean to rush you, but do you want to dance with me?" He asked, and placed his hand on my shoulder.

"Well, I am not sure. To dance? I've never danced before, let alone with a guy. I usually just go sit in the crowd." I said.

"I don't really dance, I dance a bit, but I do enjoy dancing with you. How about it?" He asked again.

"Ok, sure." I sighed, taking a loosey off my mug, and tossed it into the pool table.

We got up and walked to the back, he put his hand around my white furred wrist, and wrapped his other arm around me, pulling me close to his chest. I was surprised, the larger paw felt warm and fuzzy. The music was wonderful, and I enjoyed dancing with the large fellow. We danced for a good two hours, and then he started playing pool. To my surprise, his shots were perfect. The game went on for some time, but finally, he lost one stroke and we packed up, and stood next to the table.

"Well, do you want to meet me here tomorrow? Maybe we can go and see the town, if you want to." He asked, and planted a kiss on my cheek.

I blushed, and nodded.

"I would like that, let's meet back here. I should be off work by 9." I hugged him, and kissed him on the cheek.

"Sure. Let's meet up, at 9 here. I will be waiting."

I waved, and walked out the front door. I walked to my car and drove to my place. I made myself a coffee in the coffee machine, and logged onto the Internet. But I paid little attention to the world. I thought about that one song from back in the days we danced, it inspired me to listen to more, and I did. I found out about a love for jazzy old time music, and as I listened to the music, my mind was floating to nice thoughts, not just of love, but of wonderful times with my lover, of times we danced, and the time we met in that bar. I was thinking of a really nice time, but I did not realise I was tuning back into the real world, to a very angry looking bartender.

"Look, I don't know what your problem is, but you will get out of the hair of my customers!" He barked.

I stood to face him.

"Hey, why are you shouting at me? I didn't do anything..." I said, but I felt the hot stares of the people on the dance floor.

"Woof! Woof!" I heard someone behind me, and I turned to look.

They all pointed their fingers, and laughed as some shots made there way to me. A fox, a fox was what they all called me, all I saw was my dark grey fur reflected, but I did not mind.

"Boy, I have been here all night!" The bartender shot as I lunged out to the dance floor.

It didn't matter how many shots I took, I was able to dance, to move and to talk, but I could only move my head, and the bartender got to my further.

"I paid for all your alcohol tonight, you owe me, but if you want to stay, you'll still owe me money, I guess. Goodnight!" The bartender slammed the bar door and went to his table.

"Hey, it was my turn to buy, don't shut to door!" I heard one of the costumers shout, but I walked to the front, and the bartender checked his watch, then the doors. I managed to get a napkin, and scribbled my number, and dropped it on the counter.

He could yell, I wasn't staying for him or for his bar. I was looking for something, and I might as well go do some exploring. I went in my car and drove off, a couple of miles down the road, and another, and as I was reaching a town, I started getting tired. I pulled over into a motel, and checked in for a night.

I dropped in my stuff, and walked to the front desk.

"I just want a bed would you please?" I asked.

"Have a good night. Oh, of course, you don't have any money, you are a furry, right?" The clerk asked.

"Yeah, I am a furry, but I do have money, I just need a way to charge my phone." I said.

"Ahh, ok I have a very nice phone. You can turn it off, and charge it, and you can use it tonight!" The clerk said, a large smile on his face.

"Thanks!" I said, and went to my room.

I slumped into the bed, and turned on the TV, flicking channels by sticking my tongue out. Nothing caught my interest, and I felt so lonely. I picked up my phone, and pulled up the contact book on my phone. The large fellow was the first on it, I picked it up and dialed his number. I waited as the number was ringing, and actually hoping he wouldn't answer.

"Hello, this is Gary." He answered on the third ring.

"Oh! Hi, Gary. It's me, my name is Spud." I said, and hung up.

I tried his number again, then two more times, and finally I got his voice. I didn't like the sound of it. He was singing, and his voice made me feel uncomfortable.

"You want me to go back to the beach? I am surprised you are calling me here." I was sarcastic.

"I was sorry that I left you, it is just that..." He said.

"You just couldn't wait to dump me, is that it?" I asked.

"I was just not ready to go out with you, so I walked back, I made you lunch, but you couldn't tell me what you wanted..."

Every thing he said made me feel so angry, I could picture him in my mind, shaking his head, saying no, no, no in a voice of uncertainty.

"It is too late." I said, and hung up.

I turned off my phone, placed it on the floor, and went to sleep.

I turned off my phone the next morning, and I went outside, my phone was in my hand, and my music player was kept in a big bag I had. I started driving and exploring. Not too long, I had filled up my gas tank, and I drove to a town I found on the Internet.

I took myself to a restaurant, and I ordered breakfast, and a coffee. As I was eating, I relaxed, and I relaxed my mind. Suddenly, I got distracted, and I noticed a thick man, who seemed unhappy. He was a very large man, almost the same height as me, but a bit heavier.
