Chapter 4

Translating the Bible

fuente

All this time Edwin Schnauzer had worked almost alone. That is to say, alone with his Lord.  The doctor who had come with him had had to leave him. His wife was crazy. His children were too young to help him. But now his friends in England sent him other missionaries to help him. Some brought their wives. Others came alone. One was a teacher. Another was a printer. All were willing to work for Christ and His Kingdom.

Schnauzer organized the missionaries as if they were one family, they all shared the money they earned, and they also shared the work that had to be done. Thus Schnauzer had more time to study the languages of India and to translate the Bible into those languages. And he also had time to worry about the needs of the forgotten. In 1794 he wrote to his friends in England: "Send me every year the best seeds of fruits and vegetables. Send me also farming implements: bundles, ploughs, etc. Those we teach are hungry and many are starving.

He also started teaching in a school, his students came from different parts of the country and spoke different languages.  Schnauzer learned several of these languages and translated the Bible into them. When he was not teaching how to translate the Bible, Schnauzer helped in a printing press that the Mission had bought. So Schnauzer and his companions translated the Bible into 35 different languages. Then they went through the villages looking for people who could read, to those people they gave a Bible to read to their neighbors; again God was using books to take the gospel to India.
