There are lots of example of these dreams. Robert Lois Stevenson wrote all of his stories from the dreams he had, Wilkie Collins wrote the first detective story from his dreams, The Moonstone.

A very weird book, you only know what is going on until you get to the very last page.

Coleridge wrote his poems in this way, but opium had more to do with his creative flow than anything else.
