"Pride comes before a fall"
The message this proverb is trying to convey is that if you're too conceited, something will happen to make you look foolish. You can probably think of this as "karma-lite". My own belief is that pride doesn't cause one to fall. Failure happens due to a variety of complex reasons. If you do fall, however, that self-importance or delusion of grandeur, makes you look extra foolish.
Sometimes it's better not to get that job offer
Fresh out of university, I wanted to get a job as a trader. Good grades and a decent track record helped me get an interview at one of the biggest commodity houses in Asia. I was excited about the opportunity and prepared tons about the market, potential opportunities and also a couple of questions to ask to show my "eagerness". Sadly, the interview didn't go as well as planned.
"You don't have the "arrogance" needed to be a trader "
It has been almost ten years since that interview and I can't remember much about it other than the closing line from the MD. It struck me as odd that arrogance or swagger was needed to be a good trader but he had many years of experience and the company was flying high, so maybe he was right.
That was ten years ago when the stock price was around $2. Fast forward to today, the stock price is trading at 2 cents and there was news that it might drop to 0.2 cents due to debt restructuring. That's a 1,000x fall in the share price. Maybe they weren't arrogant enough?

Bitconneeeeeeeeeeeeeeect!!!
When you have people telling you that they're making a couple of hundred to a thousand dollars a day and that you're a fool for not investing, it gets pretty annoying fast. I think it is good to be happy with how much you're making but there's no need to be condescending towards those who are skeptical. Who knows? In a parallel universe, Bitconnect may not have been a ponzi and went up to $800.
It's a fine line
Everyone needs some self-pride. It's a fine line between being confident and being arrogant. You may have heard of Memento Mori, which is the supposed practice during the Roman era where victorious generals would have a slave walk behind them during the victory parade, whispering in their ear that "one day they too shall die".
While that's the well-known story, it is really a reflection on mortality, especially considering the vanity of life on earth and how transient earthly goods are. This theme is pretty consistent across many of the major religions, whether it is Hinduism, Buddhism, medieval Christianity.
Too much pride is useless, because in the end, our fate is the same.

hehe, Bitconnect will be remember forever!
"Maybe they weren't arrogant enough?" that question made me laugh for minutes.
Thank you for clearly defining the difference between confidence and arrogance. I think that is why people are so much greedy nowadays. I mean being greedy over time make them also arroogance.
Completely agree @udgu. It is sad to see people you know being blinded by greed sometimes but it definitely is very common nowadays.
That is true. Pride leads people to defeat sometimes.
Wow! Amazing piece for reflection over the nothingness of life and the need to hush our pride and temper our arrogance!
Good job!!!
Thank you, @joemario. Much appreciated.
You are most welcome, looking forward to my first post and i hope to get your vote anf comments too...
Have taken a deep inspirational limp from your master piece.
i'm totally agree with you... too much pride can make you alone... & we shouldn't treat people badly... we should respect every single person every step of our life..
indeed, sometimes all it needs is to ask ourselves how we would want to be treated.
