"He was not an age, but for all time".
(Ben Jonson 1572 - 1637)
When love springs to mind, "O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?", seems to be synonymous with all romantic endeavors.
The same can be said of grief, where Hamlet and grief go hand in hand.
All concepts within the English Language owe their creation to Shakespeare.
You would assume that the Ancients of Classics such as Homer, Ovid, and Virgil would have a say in language development. But no! Shakespeare's seed is so far etched within our culture, that weeding it out would cause all the other plants to die.
A world without Shakespeare would be unprofitable for all areas of life.
Theater and film would suffer, as Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet, and Othello are the most successful plays when in performance. Even education would be affected, as most English classrooms use Shakespeare's texts as a basis to understand the written word.
Think about it, 50% of all our common phrases are Shakespearean based. Remember "Knock, knock! Who's there?"; well this phrase is coined in the work of Macbeth. The phrase "Too much of a good thing" is first seen in the play 'As You Like It'.
All in all, William Shakespeare's influence on the English Language as surpassed imaginable feats. His work has suffered the slings and arrows of time, and has made us all fall in love with literature.
Without him, the world would never smile.
