Domestic Violence: Don't Destroy A Life

I couldn't contain my tears after I met one of my long forgotten but childhood friend who narrated her ordeals at the hands of her parents and why she ended up the way she now is.

Vibrant, eloquent and optimistic, Tosin had all the characters that qualifies a smart child. She was the pride and prayer of all married couples in my neighborhood until the eventual breakdown of her parent's marriage.

As I brought out my handkerchief to wipe-off the uncontrollable tears that ran down her cheek, even though my red eyes were nothing to write home about, I wondered if her parents really knew what psychological and character damage they already caused their now fully grown female child.

Now with a less flow of tears, she explained how her father's irresponsible attitudes led to the complaining and nagging attitude of her mother. She narrated what happened one particular night when her father came home drunk and all messed up. As with the attitude with most drunk men, instead of going for a shower and heading for the bed, Dr. Banji saw it necessary to start an argument with his woman. And there it begun, the rain of continued domestic violence and harrasment.

She explained that at a time, she had to run away from home; living under bridges and learning the art of begging and hustling "on the streets. " Whether she was looked for or not, no one knows but the future would definitely miss what luck and fortune she would have brought if things had gone well with her parents.

In camera, I am personally of the opinion that women and the home should be handled with utmost care and expertise for the sake of love, manhood, the society, and the future. Irrespective of where we are, what we are, and who we and our partners are, and the circumstances life and marriage brings our way, let us endeavour to say no to domestic violence.

~You can't fathom the psychological stress and physical damage it causes a person

~Neither would you have the resource(s) to erase the experience of the victim

~It destroys a life.
