Tips From A Dolphin To A Minnow (With Memes)

in #writing8 years ago (edited)

Anyone who is new to Steemit typically asks how to make high-paying posts. How come someone who just joined Steemit made 300$ from an introductory post or a popular steemian who posts a nice photograph made a three digit payout?

In this post, I want to highlight some of the common practices good authors on Stemit use. I hope you will start too. You don't need to follow these rules, but they definitely helped me get where I'm right now. The memes are just for fun.

Don't write and post immediately

If you have a killer idea for a post, don't just write and post it right away. Give it at least 24 hours before you submit it. It may turn out to be not such a great idea after all. This way you could revise your post for mistakes you probably made and can add additional paragraphs or images. You could spend some time working on a cover image. This all adds up to create a better post.

Do Research

Don't know what to write about? Open a search engine and look up things you personally are interested in or do for a living. People want to hear your opinion, especially if you are an expert in something and want to share some knowledge with the community. The more research you do, the easier it will be for you to write about your passions. Maybe you are a drummer? Write a post about the history of drums.

Be Polite

It's nice to be nice. You will not get many upvotes and followers if you are rude, here on Steemit. Even if you rant, do it with style. Writing fuck 20 times in a post didn't make it better. Another thing I noticed, steeminas are peaceful creatures by nature. Even when they disagree among each other they will engage in long conversations, each giving his or hers opinion. This is the opposite of the Facebook mentality just to troll what you don't like.

Engage

Some of the most paid posts have many comments. That is because they are not passive content you just read. In many cases, they require the participation of people in some form or another. #steemitphotochallenge is a perfect example. The Chat is also a great place to find new followers and promote your posts.

1qtcd8.jpg

Formatting Is Important

Well-formated posts always make a good impression. There are a couple of ways you can write and format your posts. I use raw Markdown code. Try to format your posts in a unique way. What I mean by that is to try different approaches to formatting your posts until the layout works best for your particular material.

1qtdue.jpg

Use Grammar Tools

You don't need to be a native English speaker in order to write good posts in English. There are tons of apps that can help you with your grammar. I use a Safari extension called grammarly.com that corrects my spelling and grammar. Do a little research and find one that best fits your needs.

1qtbrs.jpg

Use 5 Tags

Tags are your secret weapon! You can use only five, and you should use all of them wisely. Your first tag is your main category. Look up if there are some categories you can start to contribute that are still young. You can even start your own tag.

1qtdy9.jpg

Don't Overpost

One of the main mistakes new fish do is to overpost their blog. There are many reasons for that. Maybe they are excited about just signing up and want to share all 250 of their favorite videos from a Youtube playlist. Or maybe they think that if they post 40 posts a day they will get more upvotes. Either way for the other users this is just another form of spamming their feed and this will probably get them unfollowed or worse muted. I recommend posting up to 4 posts a day, and if you feel the need to post more just don't overdo it and save your ideas for later. Quality over quantity!

1qtchw.jpg

Don't Resteem That Often

Yes, resteeming is great, but when you just start out no one will notice your posts hidden among all the resteemed posts you put in your blog. A good rule would be to have at least 50% your own original material on your blog. People follow you because of you, not your resteems.

1qte1k.jpg

Don't Copy/Paste Stuff

Plagiarism is bad, m'kay! Everybody knows it and everybody does it on different levels. This is and always has been a hot topic. Just copy/pasting post from other sites will get you nowhere, believe me. If you really like a publication you found somewhere, read it from beginning to end, and tell it with your own words on Steemit. If it's good content, people will upvote. Of course, it's a good idea to give credits to source articles and images. Your posts will look more nice and informative.

1qtbh3.jpg

Use Images

Never underestimate the power of images. A post with no images is less likely to be opened by people, it's a psychological fact. On the other hand, don't overdo it, crowding your posts with too many images will confuse your readers and will probably close your post. A very important rule is always to give credits to the image authors. If you get caught stealing original images you will most likely to get flagged and all your reputation will probably drop to 0.

1qtcor.jpg

PROMOTE!

Promote, promote, promote! Even for 0.001 SBD, you can get your post to the promoted tab. Especially if the tag is not that popular. For a newcomer the promote option is a great way to get more coverage and recruit more followers.

1qtcxh.jpg

The Art Of Patience

And most important of all, be patient. Good things come to those who wait. Slowly build up your loyal followers circle, with each post you will learn something of value and gain a follower or two. Find your own path on the Steemit journey and with enough dedication and effort, you can create great posts too.

great post. I bought in as a Dolphin and half the money from my posts come from my own vote :-)
Will get there one day

Thank you for the tips, I moved my blog onto steemit and it's been hard "transferring" my followers. I mainly write about Pinup/Vintage lifestyle, wellness, homesteading and positive living. Still trying to test which tags are more effective for me. But I'm grateful I'm making something instead of nothing as we all did on social media.

That is wonderful, I will follow you for sure. I like all things #vintage :)

Aww thanks! Following right back!

Thank you, I am a new Steemian and I am doing anything to learn how to write good post~

Nice post man. I got a big relief as I'm new in this site and also earn some big blow. You know it's help me a lot. Be live me. It will help me a lot. I will read this once in a day to stay focused. thanks a lot!

Very nice post indeed. Good job!

Great post! Now, do I get points on context of this article for noticing that you have the word "stemit" in the first paragraph? Or is that a hidden Easter egg in this post about style, grammar and etiquette? Hehe :D -Followed, upped, and re-steemed.

thank you for nice advice :)

Thanks a lot for sharing insightful advice. I'll share it with my followers who expect good content from me.

Amazing article for newbies. I can see steemit becoming a great community to hang around.

Yes, the community is great.

Thank you so much @rossenpavlov 😀 I will keep that in my mind always. I am not a blogger or a writer. But with steemit I like to be one. I believe I can create my own quality article.
Upvoted. Resteemed and Followed you 😀

Good luck!

Thank you 😀 happy steeming! 😀😀😀

You too.

This is how beautiful steemit is. People are so good and kind. God bless us all. 😀

Thank you SO much for this info. I was wondering what, and how should I post it. Thanks again, I'm gonna put these things into practice as I start posting.

That's some really helpful solid advice! Thank you very much! Followed you!

All very good overall tips @rossenpavlov

This is really a pretty comprehensive list of how to get started here on Steemit.

I notice you left out the part about follow-begging -- I wonder why lol

@shayne

Good observation. Made me laugh.
The recent follow-begging situation really deserves a post of its own. It's a good thing that many people join, but the old model "I follow you, you follow me" doesn't apply here. So people need to learn how to behave, I'm just a messenger :)

Indeed. I've actually posted recently about how follow begging will damage your chances of growing with steemit because people are going to flag you for spam, which will lower your reputation. It's just bad behavior, you know? On Steemit, people should act like they would around good friends. :D

Yap, I definitely read that post. I guess sitting back and reading everything is a good way to get familiar with steemit to begin with. :)

Agree. It's nice to be nice.

Grammarly is a life savior for non-native English speakers :) Excellent tips! Thanks for sharing them.

Found your article, and I love your advice. I am trying to attract a following and make friends. Thank you

I'm glad I was able to help.

Thanks for this. The one I struggle with the most is being patient. But be patient I must...

I will defenetly use your advice @rossenpavlov. It helped me crarify several aspect of a Stemians life :). Any advice on how can someone integrate his steemit posts to his wp blog? Thank you.

A set of super recommendations and tips. I agree to all of them and adopt them as well.

Still it is hard hard work to get some votes in. Still you can see users posting not more than a link to a news article and get a very decent reward on it, eg 10$ or more for just 2 minutes of work. Still you can see a lot of quality posts with serious work behind it and following all the rules you mentioned in your posts, and get hardly votes in, or at least not the combination of votes that will make some rewards (eg 1-2$ and more).

But I guess that is what we have to accept. Although the number of bot votes seem to be lower now, still a lot of auto voters are on the network.

The Steemit UI editor doesn't support the command "center", that is really a pity since I like that style of editing the best.

People earn good rewards because they give valuable content in one form or another. When they build up a big following base, let's say, 1000 followers, they hold influence, and this is where the true value of Steem is. The more reputation and Steem Power you have the more influence you cast on the platform. Once you have your loyal followers you also could make 10$ for just posting a link. But I think there are better ways to use Steemit.

Absolutely, posting links is more like Twitter and I think that should be another service not mixed with what we have here. Therefore I do not understand the newslink tag and newslink SteemTrail to be honest. But yes, we cannot control what content is created.

The blockchain can be implemented in many ways. @jesta made a forum on the Steem blockchain, there is an Instagram alternative I read about a while ago and much more projects. As I said before quality is more important than quantity. If enough people are engagedd this can only benefit the platform.

The Instagram I'm trying out myself, it is called SteepShot. An Android App is around that I use. For my iPhone still not an App available.

Hey man, this is very good content. Is the 5 tag bug, fixed?

Yes, it works now.

great tips. upvote

Great tips for all.

Pictures and tags are very important, just to add a few more; post title, first sentence and first picture.

Thanks a load for the tips

I'll do my best to use them wisely

Thank you, It's all up to you.

Good Tips ! makes a lot of sense. It's my 1 month Steem Birthday today and you taught me something new.. I didn't know that you could promote a post for 0.001SBD ! that's a great piece of info.. I've had a few under-performing posts which could do with a bit of promotion (following)

Happy to help.

that's STEEMIT for you ! all help and it's designed to motivate with peace and happiness ! Hippy Coders

Very well written and easy to follow advice. The very first point is actually a very good one. People would rush into posting (various reasons), but come to later on realize they need to add / change something. Can you edit your posts btw?

Yes you can edit your post later.

Thanks for sharing these tips. When you're a minnow, every little scrap counts!

love this one!

Memes are my secret weapon. Now you know :)

I really have no clue how to speak meme. I feel so old because of that sometimes. :p

The meme is actually old as human history goes.

Awesome! Thank you very much for the info! I love learning in the comments here!

Great tips, sure will use them :)

Found your post in post promotion.. Great post, very informative. following you now! check out my blog and follow along if you like any of it too!good luck steeming!

Thanks, buddy!

Always appreciate good tips. For learning new things and being reminded.
Thank you very much.

My pleasure.

Nicely written. Thanks it will help me allot. Sometime my whole day passes how to post and what to post among such an great writer, Will it be noticed. will be promoted or simply people likes it. Nicely written.

Take care of your followers, and they will take care of you. This is the best advice I can give.

Thanks for your advice. I definitely take care of my followers and try make every one happy and joyful.
Thanks again for your advice.

great interresting post ! I vote you

Great article as always @rossenpavlov.
Thanks for taking the time to put it together. What are the rates for promotion?

You can promote at any cost you like. The more you pay your post will show prior to others. If you can't afford as much as a 1$ for promotion, post in less popular tags. With very small promotion cost like 0.001 SBD your post will maybe be the only one in the promoted tab, or if there are others, the competition is not that big.

So if I promote for 0.28 SBD my post(as I just did) it is not going to be seen by almost nobody.

Depends on which tags you promoted.

My post is the only one promoted in #bwphotocontest but I still dont see a sign of any effect

The Promoted tab is there, you just need to click on it. Evey tag has its own Promoted tab. When people see this tag they can click on the promoted tab and see your post. This is the effect.

Do you also have some advice on WHEN to post? Like during the day?

I tried both ways. It's more like a lottery for me. Sure there are charts you can follow and I have seen real results. Most of the traffic comes from US. For instance after 18:00 UTC there are more people online. If you post something at 3 AM it's less likely to be seen.
I also had some good post just posting at random time. Considering that Steemit is getting bigger, time differences will be less noticeable.
It's always a good idea to plan before you post.

I want to post via streemian during the follwing days. As I can choose the time there. I will experiment.

Generally aim for 17:00-22:00 UTC

thanks. I will do that!

These are some really helpful tips! Many of these are even useful outside of Steemit! Thank you for taking the time!

Thanks a lot for providing us such a great tips. It will be game changer for us.
Pivoted.

Really a great post. As a new joiner i was about to make the most common mistakes mentioned above. Now will definitely think before writing more posts.
Did not get how promoting a post helps me. Also resteeming helps the author not me right ?
