Revenge For Dinner

When I opened youtube last night there was a new release in the recommendations! I hit the play button and this is what came to life.

An army. Thousands, millions of tiny little killers. Ready to use their big numbers to make up for their small size. As if size is all that matters when it's about killing. No, a well-worked-out plan is what it takes and "soldiers" to carry out the orders. Flooding up the waters, single-cell organisms release their toxic weapons in the waters. Poisonous, lethal toxins that smother the fish swimming around the area.

Oh! those poor creatures. Innocent and helpless. Look at them shaking violently unable to breathe. Their body functions suddenly refuse to work. Oxygen will no longer flow all over their small bodies. Paralysis. Death.

In the morning she found a few of last night's victims floating on the surface of the waters. She had gone to find mussels. It was their anniversary. She wanted to make him a great dinner. She wanted to please him. After all, he had been so kind all those years they had been together. He had always been kind, gentle and tender. You could see it in the black circles that decorated her eyes. You could see it in the bruises adorning her body. You could smell it in his breath that revealed the scent of alcohol. You could feel it in his hands as they fell violently on her.

She picked up the mussels. They were his favorite seafood. She was going to cook them for tonight. With devoutness she cleaned them from the seaweed that had grown over their shells. In the big pot of boiling water she put them. White wine and spices she used. Grated tomatoes and parsley and onions. The pasta was ready. The mussels too. She mixed them together. The table she set and candles she lit. Wine was served in the glasses. Her red dress she was wearing.

He came. He sat at the table. He drank some of his wine. Lukewarm he said it was. He didn't like it that way. Let's see what shit she made for dinner he said. At least this was hot enough. His fork he picked and spun it in the plate. The pasta that rolled around it with pieces of mussels she had picked from the bay that morning were soon to get to his mouth. One mouthful after the other. He seemed to like it.

She was expressionless. Staring at him eating. Admiring her man. This night was specially set for him. To please him. To show him her love and gratitude. One mouthful after the other. The sound of him chewing was the only thing heard in the dining room. He was coughing. He was suddenly feeling hot. His hand started rubbing his throat. A weird burning sensation was coming all the way up his gullet. Dizzy. He could not keep his eyes open, everything was turning blurry. He felt like there was no air in the room. He wanted to scream, ask her to help him but he couldn't. He tried to get off the chair. He found himself flat on the floor. Twitching. His whole body was twitching. Thumping on the wooden floor. She could distinctively remember the sound of his shoe tips on the wooden planks.

All this time she was there. Watching. Waiting. Wondering. How long was it going to last? Longer than the nights she would spend on the floor? How much did it hurt? More than how her body felt trampled under his feet? How desperate did he feel? More than her every time she "had it coming"?

No. His was quick. Five minutes more or less. All these years could have been lived otherwise had she decided to thank him earlier. I guess it's never too late... is it?

*Original story by @ruth-girl - Steemit, 2018

The story was mainly inspired by yesterday's post on Red Tides, a phenomenon of harmful algal blooms (HAP) that end up in waters containing algal toxins that kill marine life and even people who happen to eat contaminated seafood. If you're interested in learning the sciency stuff, you can click on this link: Bizarre Natural Phenomena Vol. 49 - When The Seas Turn To Blood (Red Tide)

A special thanks to @greenrun as his comment pushed me to write some fiction about it. I had something spinning in my mind, but you gave me the motivation to do it on the very same day and not put it on my to-do-list. It's not actually horror as you asked for, though. :)

Για τους Έλληνες συμπατριώτες που τυχαίνει να διαβάζουν: ναι, ναι, έβλεπα αρκετό Κοκκινόπουλο μικρή!

Thank you so much for your time!

Until my next post,
Steem on and keep smiling, people!

Very well written, though not a very pleasant topic :-)

Thank you! My muse last night was showing me her dark side ;)

Everybody needs their own @twiceuponatime :-)
I hate to admit it, but I couldn't get along without him.

True! We would be monotonous if we had just one and "good" side. The contrasting forces make us special.

I think that you may have noticed. I am trying to find a third side that can reconcile the other two :-)

You just reminded me of this painting I saw the other day. The many different and fighting sides...

@reinhard-schmid does amazing work, don't you think?

I gave him an upvote. Can't say I would want it hanging in my living room, but to view it in a museum, yes.

That was cold. But I guess the man had it coming. I did click the YouTube link and I was suddenly transported to a dark room with creepy crawlies. Good short. Didn't see the end coming, kinda sneaked up on me and bam! There it was starring at me. Lol

He deserved it from her point of view.

The truth is I wanted to make something dark and stay underwater, but then... an episode of Deadly Women happened :P

He should have been more cautious, but abusers seldom are. Oh well, the lady will have a lot of explanation to do when the forensic team shows up.

I guess they will understand easily that it was just food poisoning and she could do nothing but watch her dearest husband suffer. This poor woman, she went through so much... ;)

@ruth-girl, tbh that is one great way to kill a person. By making them eat the contaminated seafood. Algae does the job and you get away with murder. Hehe!

Jokes apart, I read the whole story while listening to that dark, mysterious music you embedded in the post. Loved it. :') Upvoted it. Cheers!

Yeah, she was a pretty clever girl, wasn't she?

Thanks for the support and encouraging comment @hungryhustle! :)

Yes @ruth-girl. She definitely was. :-) A ruthless girl. Haha!
And you are most welcome. Hope to see more such episodes. :-D

Whoohoo.. rather "bitter sweet".. which is actually the music that came to my mind, as I read your story (Bitter Sweet Symphony) Never mess with an intelligent woman... better be careful with my comments in the future ;-)

Hehe! That's true, don't underestimate the tricks a woman can do ;)

I loved your story, especially what inspired it :) It reminds me of the people that risk eating puffer fish, even though, if it is cooked wrong they can die. I wouldn't risk it :)

Thanks for reading!

Yes, I would not risk eating anything with high chances of food poisoning either...

Yeah, I really don't get it? I'm going to eat this to get the thrill of almost dying, but not dying, wth? It makes no sense to me. Food is to be enjoyed, not a adrenaline rush lol

Forgive me for my ridiculous question.
Where else can I get such seafood, except for Florida? )))

I guess anywhere where HAB occurs, take a look at the map here
https://www.whoi.edu/redtide/regions/world-distribution
You can find distribution maps for different cases of poisoning as well.

Now my turn for a ridiculous question:
You are not planning to make dinner for anyone with it, are you? :P

According to the map you provided, I appreciated the remoteness of the points from me. I decided that I would use mushrooms in case of urgent need. Mushrooms for me - a more affordable option. In my environment there are several specimens that have long been forcing me to prepare a similar dinner)))

In that case I guess you should stick with the resources available in your place ;)

👍
waiting for new interesting inspirational stories!

Reminded me of the movie "The Burning Bed".
That was also about gratitude. :)

I'll keep that in mind. After writing this I remembered an episode from a greek police drama series. The whole setting shares a lot with this director's viewpoint and aesthetics I think..

It's kind of horror, especially for me, as I love mussels and we pick our own in the Summer of the beach rocks ...scary.
Great story.

I hope this story won't put you off from eating them again. It was just a twisted scenario.
Thanks for reading :)

Hahahaha interesting one
This is indeed Revenge For Dinner

Thanks! Next time you order seafood think twice ;)

No. His was quick. Five minutes more or less. All these years could have been lived otherwise had she decided to thank him earlier. I guess it's never too late... is it?
wow you have shared so beautiful story with beautiful music
