The Sad Reality We Call Life

in #writing7 years ago (edited)

So yesterday,  I went to complain about my pay and to request for a possible transfer to another hospital due to the fact that I'm currently being underpaid.  I'm being paid about 40% of the minimum other doctors in the state should receive. All I was asking for what a raise to the same pay grade as my mates or a transfer to a different hospital. However,  when I got to the secretariat,  someone there told me that others have not gotten any salary in 8 months.  I mean 8 freaking months!  He then went further to say I should be happy I'm getting mine at all (at least he implied it).

I didn't know which to get angry at; the fact that people have been working for 8 months without pay or the man telling me to be happy I'm regularly getting seriously underpaid.

Everyday these people keep going to work with cars running on fuel bought with borrowed money,  paying children's tuition and for clothes with borrowed money.  They get sick and admitted into the hospital,  there's no health insurance coverage.  They still end up paying huge medical bills in government owned hospitals with borrowed money; no assistance from the government that employed them whatsoever.

When these people decide not to go to work because they do not have money to take the bus to work,  they get fired from the jobs for which a lot of sweat and blood (in some cases literally during the rush for job applications) was spilled to get.  A job where thousands fought to get just that one position. Don't even get me started on the University tuition costs or the industrial action strikes that extend the students' stay in schools. The number of years spent at home before gaining admission into tertiary institutions  and the years spent in job search is just disheartening. All to end up being owed salary of 8 months;  some up to 10 months.

The crazy thing is when election period comes,  2-3 months salary gets paid and newly minted promises or a recrafting of the old ones are made; promises that won't cross the edge of the platform on which they stand. The sad part is that these people who have suffered so much under the so called government would still vote them in for another term filled with suffering. I then ask myself, who is to blame?  The wicked politicians or the brain dead citizens who still vote the former in over and over again? Can't they (we)  learn the lessons they've so thoroughly and painfully learned and cause an actual beneficial change for themselves.

I recently read a quote that says:

You are your greatest obstacle

In this context,  it seems we the citizens are truly our own obstacles.  I just hope more people would wake up and take back their future.

Just in case you're wondering,  I'm not running for office.  I'm just another regular citizen tired of all the nonsense.

Sort:

I wonder where our country is headed with this type of cruelty from our government. may God help us

What you are saying is sad but also true. I have witnessed a situation where a man worked for 11months and wasn't paid a penny only to be dismissed on the 12th month empty handed 😭

That's just evil

Something needs to be done to this country something really needs to be done
People should stop receiving rice for voting

Rice that will just last a few days. Later they'll suffer for 4 years

Nice post, God help Nigeria
