Istanbul Market

Istanbul Market

Your gaze was melodic and fastened tightly upon mine
As I labored in vain to concentrate on baskets and jewels
Displayed like treasures on makeshift tables and wooden carts
For the evening's assortment of wandering fools;
Yet neither trinket nor bauble would curb my burgeoning
Fascination with the slight curve of your mouth and
The shadow of beard that sharpened the angle of your jaw.
What business had I there at your side speaking in tongues,
Fidgeting with my scarf, and coveting your touch upon the railing?
As slumber now refuses my plea in the moonless night,
The echo of your smile waxes comfortable in my darkness.
