A.I. or Exploration: How do we survive?

in #writing7 years ago

Stephen Hawking’s death this month was tragic. We lost one of our greatest minds to the weakness of flesh and bone. But what did he think about how we are progressing? He was aided by machines to live, but was a fervent enemy of research into the singularity. Hawking reasoned it would be our downfall, and that the science community would better serve humanity by pointing their sights skyward, and figuring out how to get off this dying planet before we consumed ourselves.

What do you think? A.I. for the win? Colonies on Mars? How do we survive?

I think that we have to be very careful with technology whose basis is to outthink us. We have no idea what we are creating in this case and with the greed and arrogance in today's world we are likely courting disaster. Great minds like Elon Musk are sending the same warnings about A.I. All tech is great but all can also be used irresponsibly. What do you think, are we ready for thinking machines?

I think we already have thinking machines that are doing a great job! I agree that greed and evil could be a problem, as usual, they are in great things. For me, technology is a great thing that we just have to use in the right way. Machines will only do what we "tell" them to do...They will just do all that much much faster than us (our brain)

Dear all, A.I. is a really interesting topic. This year in Croatia (Osijek) we had Brain Awareness Week with A.I. as one of the three topics. Discussions and lectures were great... Basically, we concluded that we all think about robots when we mention A.I. what is far away from reality. We are mostly scared from the moment when we will lose control on A.I.
In my opinion, we should stay on this planet and use A.I. to make it great as it actually is! :)

in the words of Willy Wonka, up and out. That's the only way we survive. I think the great filter is in front of us, and I think the great filter is Time as dictated by Gravity.

We have to leave but anything that can sustain us is not reachable by one generation (at current technology). Mars is an option (Think that show "The Expanse").

I think our biggest issue is balance. Too much War or too much peace are equally bad for the chances of our society and species to survive the gravity of earth.

I think AI will need to be leveraged to come to the conclusions/theories that we need to mathematically redefine our universe and ultimately traverse it.

Course, we could just be in one giant endless simulation that the AI runs ...

annnnd we're back to square one :)

I think we really need to send a colony to Mars, one to the moon, and two or three large colonies in large space stations orbiting the former, or just orbiting around the solar system.

This way if disaster were to strike, we have humans on other places to help the species survive.

have you had a chance to watch the show on Syfy "The Expanse" ... its basically this, colonize Mars, some space stations around, colonize our moon and other planet moons ... and then a bunch of stations built into larger asteroids that are caught in the battle between the sun and Saturn's gravity :)

I think thou, if disaster is to strike, its because we created it, and chances are all humans in the system will get sucked into the disaster and or its aftermath ...

No. But sounds interesting. I have been so swamped with work stuff it can be hard to find time for entertainment.

I have thought about designing the concept for a huge space structure haha but maybe some day when I have the time.

why does everyone idolise Hawking?
who cares if a black hole emits radiation , does it really help us down on planet Earth? You know we have some real life issues to deal with and quintilions of dollars get funneled to space and hollywood ? Like wtf?

Nice photos. they deserve an award. It is very nice. great work
