RE: Before you quit that job... (Part I)

in #writing7 years ago

I can totally relate. I spent many years as an executive sales guy for software companies. They paid regularly enough but had the habit of taking accounts away and setting unattainable goals. I spent my life on a plane and started missing key milestones of my kids lives.

I remember the advice of a respected colleague. He said simply, "do what it takes to keep the pay coming in." What he meant was to swallow a bit of pride, keep doing the job so there was the prospect of short term money, and look for a new place while doing this.

Every little thing you build on your own comes a little harder, with a little more delay on the payout but the upside is it is yours.

Can't wait for the to be continued.

@zekepickleman I can't read your comment without wondering if you didn't regret not quitting that software sales job...

I figured if it was easy and fun, they would not pay me the big bucks to do it.....so it was supposed to be a life-sucking pain in the ass. That being the case, I learned quite a bit about business and now run my own IT consulting company in a small town where life is easy. I managed to keep the pay coming in while I started my own thing and it all works out in the end for people driving their own ship!

Working for people can be so tough. It is never perfect. If the pay is good, the working conditions would be poor. If the conditions are okay, your team players would be weird. There seem to always be a defect.

I have mapped out plans to be my own Boss. So help me God.
