Sunday will mark another chapter of women making history in WWE with a first-ever women's Money in the Bank match.
WWE unveiled the first-ever women's Money in the Bank briefcase on the June 6 edition of SmackDown Live, and while it is not yet available for purchase at WWEShop.com, it'll be interesting to see how it performs as a merchandise mover. Currently, there is only one best-selling item from a female WWE Superstar on the website—Sasha Banks' Legit Boss necklace which is listed at $11.99—in the top 20.
Interest in WWE's current product has suffered from stout competition from both the Stanley Cup and the NBA Finals. Both Raw (2.542 million viewers) and SmackDown (2.349 million viewers) managed annual lows in viewership this past week.
But with both major sporting events out of the way, WWE looks to build momentum through one of its more successful pay-per-view models and an added touch of historical relevance.
And while many are excited about seeing the popular match with a feminine slant, some are taking the protective dad approach, using a cautious tone as women literally continue to ascend into history.
Dave Meltzer worried that the women would "kill themselves to have as good of a match as the guys."
Jason Agnew of Live Audio Wrestling noted "you have five performers in this, some don't have all that much experience. This could be dangerous."
Grizzled co-host Dan Lovranksi believed this match requires a "special type of performer," noting Kofi Kingston, Rob Van Dam, Dolph Ziggler and, of course, not a single woman.
