A few days ago a common assumption made, came up in conversation when our son mentioned the verse in Isaiah 50:6 which says in many versions the same as this corrupt version, the NIV(I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.)
The KJV is that little bit of a better wolf in sheep's clothes yet still infers the same in its words.
See here, the true translation of the original Hebrew text, Original Hebrew text:
Isa 50:6 גוי נתתי למכים ולחיי למרטים פני לא הסתרתי מכלמות ורק׃
KJV version:
Isa 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.
Literally translated from the Hebrew:
Yeshayahu 50
6 My torso(or trunk or back) I gave to the beaters and My cheek to the scourgers, I did not hide My face(or My presence) from insults and spitting.
(מרטים)=literally means: from strips/ straps(of leather)
This verse has no mention of hair nor does the word above mean plucking or pulling as per the strong's and other dictionaries! Ancient Hebrew is a language in which the words contain the clues as to its meaning, that which is being referred to. As it does for example with the word for road or highway the word in Ancient Hebrew describes it as, in from rock(as in made from rock and you walk in it).
Also further into the above verse we read in the poor translation the word for shame or as the strong's dictionary tells us dishonour but seeing as dishonour and shame are nouns that cannot have a plural in this sentence structure, which in the Hebrew it does in this case, it therefore means insults as they can be plural here.
