This is one of the question for a newcomer, how does YouTube makes money. When I started a YouTube channel in 2010 I was really excited about the policy of YouTube partner program. Yes, that is the way YouTube and content creators makes money.
If you visit YouTube from your PC, you will see an add on the video. Also they show an add on top of right side. YouTube makes money from that adds. When someone clicks on that adds, YouTube get 0.3$ to 0.5$. But YouTube does not take total amount of money. It pays 55% to the content creators and takes 45% for itself.
There are billions of views per week in YouTube. So they get a lots of money from these adds and shares a portion of that with the YouTube.
