YouTube used to be a great site for new and established video content creators to both host their videos and share in advertising revenue.
But recently, its become apparent than YouTube is trying to squeeze out small content creators and is propping up content from traditional media companies. CNN and a family-friendly independent political channel can both cover the same news story, but while YouTube pushes the CNN video to their trending page it will demonetize the independent channel.
YouTube wants to be cable 2.0, as is evidenced with their YouTube Red service and the way they prop up and promote content from networks and cable TV stations. They're taking what was great about the platform, the passionate independent content creators, and spitting in their faces.
This will accelerate the departure of big YouTubers to other platforms. I've seen more and more gaming channels that I've followed for years popping up on Steemit in the last few months, where they are free to post and profit from their original content without the platform putting up roadblocks to discourage these people.
YouTube is going downhill and is turning into a platform for legacy media, which is the exact opposite reason why people were attracted to the site in the first place. Their trending page is full of clips from late night shows and news organizations, including one from TMZ with just 56k views. Its obvious that YT is picking and choosing who they want to keep around and who they want to discourage.
And I, for one, will celebrate once a viable competitor to YouTube rises. Hopefully DTube can be that competitor.
I am hoping Dtube will be a viable competitor for Youtube too. I did have hopes for Vidme but that didn't last. I feel like until there Is a platform that can take on Youtube, Youtube cannot be stopped.
I joined Steemit September last year so I'm fairly new myself but I have seen a huge Influx of new users In the gaming category specifically within the past month, so I definitely think people are getting fed up of Youtube.
I don't actually check the trending page so I'm not familiar with whats being shown on there, nothing ever relevant to me so I don't bother. I stick to watching the channels that I am subscribed too. But yes Youtube Is going downhill and I assumed they pick and choose who they want to support, If your face fits and all of that.
To be honest I don't know what I'm expecting from Youtube anymore. I'm one of the many millions that are trying to 'make It'.
