Why Steemit is better than Youtube.

Youtube is no longer worth it

It used to be worth it to make videos just for a little bit of cash on the side, I wasn't getting rich but it was something to do in my spare time. Here is how I did in 2016 (when I started):

2016youtube.jpg

A watch time of 227 827 minutes for a payout of 259 dollars not great but still worth it as additional source of income. I thought I would slowly build subscribers and keep doing better.

But here is what 2017 is looking like so far:

2017.jpg

177 000 minutes (not that far off from 2016's total) but payment at only 66 dollars. I have seen much more popular channels than mine complaining what was once their livelyhood is no longer paying the bills and they are begging for donations. There are people who started making tons of cash on youtube who quit their jobs to do it full time. I bet that seems like a bad decision now.

Youtube's rules are vague and unfair

This was one of the big factors in my decision to check out Steemit. Youtube's seemingly random decisions to de monetize certain videos and not really explain why are frustrating. You could spend a bunch of time, effort and even money making and promoting a video and then they would say to it violates their community standards and could not be monetized. Meanwhile other channels made almost the same video and had no problems. Steemit doesn't have silly rules like that. It's not perfect and it it's a whale centric site with too much bot influence, but it has potential.

I will probably make videos once in a while still but the days of worrying I didn't put out new recent content are done. I am going to focus on Steemit I think it has more potential to build a big and maybe even profitable following than Youtube. I decided to apply the same philosophy I did to youtube, don't think about the money, just create. Thanks for reading

Thank you for this post. I was thinking about going hard on youtube and Steemit. I would love to simplify it down to just one social media platform. The information you shared will be very helpful for me going forward in my decision making.

Yeah I don't know if I would start a youtube channel today....

the problem with this is. steemit doesn't support its own video hosting option. you must upload videos to youtube first. it will never even have a chance unless this is changed otherwise, more people on steemit just means more need for youtube

Good point. Is there any other platform you can upload videos from?

any url that hosts videos can be attached to blog
so vimeo, worldstar, facebook, ect.

Thanks @viraldrome. I have been wondering how YouTubers are doing. Your post has answered it for me. I think the amount made every year will drop as more and more people are getting into youtube. It sounds like a supply and demand thing.

It seems to be across the board even the really popular channels are doing worse.

thanks for the update, got me thinking and it was also inspiring :)
