When you bring a pile of groceries, our first instinct is always to get the perishable items to the fridge as quickly as you can.
Hoever, despite popular belief, there are some food items that you should never store in the refrigerator.
It helps food to be preserved but little did we know, some foods can actually lessen the flavor, change the texture and at times cause the food to spoil faster than the norm.
Here are the items we should not refrigirate.
Honey, as it will cause the honey to harden
Bread- Refrigeration will only cause the bread to dry out.
Nuts and dried goods- It is fine for these food to be stored in a dry cool place.
Berries- No need ot refrigerate as it needs to be eaten in a day or two span.
Herbs- It wilt faster in the fridge.
Onions- It needs to be in an area that allows air circulation
Banana- Putting it in the fridge delaying the ripening process and loses its potassium content.
Potatoes- It kills potato flavor inside. Advisable to store in paper bags and dry bags.
Avocado- Only ripe avocado is suggested to be refrigerated to keep it from turning brown when exposed to air.
Ketchup and vinegars- As it has already preservatives.
Spices- Condiments and spices can last up to 3 years outside fridge.
Coffee- Refrigerated coffee has drastically different flavor due to condensation.
Melons and watermelons- Tend to break down and become powdery once refrigerated
Hope this helps to avoid refrigerating foods and take away the essential nutrients it can provide.
wow, thanks for this tips, this is really a big help and additional knowledge.
Not just for yayas and moms!
Also for teens who most probably know less in the kitchen :)
Wow. I didn't know much of that! Great post @foodtaster
Especially the potato?
i normally see potato beside onion and garlic. :D Seriously!
Have to show this to my mom. Keeping food's nutrients is as important as keeping food fresh.
Me too @cryptoman, I see our potato beside those smelly dry goods too!
Good thing there were many research now about what to refrigerate and what's not. ^^
This will help me a lot for I only go to supermarket twice a month so I need to know what are those to refrigerate and what are not to.
Thanks for posting this.
Yes, now we know that just because we preserve an item, doesn't mean we saved it.
To find out, we are taking nutrients of food when stored and handled wrongly.
