Foreign visitors in Myeik Archipelago.
A monument is due to be built in Myeik, Taninthayi Region, in honour of those who participated in Myanmar's 8888 uprising also known as the 1988 pro-democracy protests.
The monument is due to be built in two months after a location has been chosen in the town. It will praise those, including monks and students, who lost their lives during the uprising as well as those who are still alive, said the organisers.
"It is time we built a democratic monument to the 8888 uprising. We are trying to do this not only to show our deep respect for those who died in the movement but also to have a monument to democracy. We have been planning it for two years," said organiser Tin Ko Ko Oo.
Four sites have been suggested with one on Strand Road seen as the most likely.
Myeik Township Development Affairs Committee chairman Myat Ko and officials visited the site and formed an organising committee which is tasked with completing the monument in two months.
The monument is due to be 12-feet tall with a six-foot square plinth.
