A few months ago I watched a documentary called; "A Plastic Ocean" See trailer. The documentary had a big impact on me but I was making a lot of lifestyle changes at that time which made me postpone the whole zero waste thing a bit. But after my recent trip to Bali, I feel like I'm ready. Now don't get me wrong, I'm probably not the kind of a person that will fit a whole year worth of garbage into 1 jar. I created the "Ditch the plastic series" to show people some easy zero waste swaps.
Here are a few facts about how plastic affects our oceans:
- Normal degradation leaves particles that can still be harmful to living things — nanoparticles and microparticles. These so called nanoparticles of plastic can be eaten by marine animals. It is estimated around 90 per cent of seabirds are doing so. These plastics can cause blockages of the gut or perforation of the intestines. Ingestion of plastic can also cause toxic chemicals such as phthalates — a plasticiser that effects the hormone system — to leach into the animal.
- Marine animals get entangled in plastic. They get wrapped up in fishing line nets, plastic bags, balloons and straps. Research has estimated that between 5,000 and 15,000 sea turtles are entangled each year by fishing gear washing ashore in northern Australia alone.

Today I want to talk about plastic straws. This is probably one of the most easiest things to swap. Let's take a look at some alternatives.
1. Paper straws
What's fun about these paper straws is that they come in various patterns and colours. These straws are perfect for restaurants, parties, weddings or any event that hosts a lot of people since they are inexpensive and biodegradable.
2. Glass straws
I bought my glass straws at Earth Cafe Seminyak. They come with a small cleaning brush and a patterned "sleeve". Due to hygienic reasons I would prefer the glass straws because you can actually see the inside which makes them easier to clean.
3. Stainless steel straws
4. Bamboo straws
How awesome do these look? Perfect for a tropical theme party right? These would make a great addition to your cocktail.
Please check out this website for more plastic free options. This is not a sponsored post. This just happened to be the one website that ships worldwide and sells all the straws mentioned above. You can also order a sample pack which I think is pretty cool if you're still indecisive.

Great post ... there are so many little ways we can start to reduce plastic waste... it all starts with small actions we take in our own lives
Totally agree!! Babysteps 😄

Beautifully said, so true :-)
Very important topic especially nowadays, have you been to Ubud? am going to start following you :)
I agree! Yes, magical place don't you think? If you're still in Indonesia, I would really recommend going to the Nusa islands close to Bali👌 It's a bit less touristy and so beautiful!!! Also a great stop if you love diving and snorkeling. You can swim with manta rays over there.
