I often use split toning particularly on highlights (sometimes on shadows but in landscape that can be too harsh) to bring the shot together. The eucalyptus trees are more of a muddy green colour than the conifer forests of the Northern Hemisphere.
It had a gray vibe with all the gray brown rocks; the split toning is enough just to tie the highlights into the same colour cast as the foreground mountains. It is quick to do in lightroom so I find it quite useful.
