Devils Gullet

in #adventure5 years ago

A snowstorm passes over towering dolerite cliffs at Devils Gullet to allow a brief shower of light to flood the view across the remote Tasmanian central plateau with its forests, valleys, mountains and rugged terrain. The storm engulfing Clumner Bluff (1559m) was directly overhead a few minutes earlier with white out conditions and summer snow. The dolerite columns in the foreground are over 220m high and plunge into the Fisher River valley which is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, on the northern rim of the Great Western Tiers. Tasmania, Australia.

I sold a photo from this series of shots to Tasmania National Parks and you can actually see it on the new sign board at Devils Gullet (bottom right photo). Cool to see when one goes back to the lookout.

The angle which you'd taken this devil's Gullet would would have been pretty challenging yes? Wow, amazing this is beautifully, the view from the place and the colours is awesome.

It is quite a steep dropoff so yes it is hard to set up close to the edge.

Love the grading. Brown adds a lot and compliments with those grey/brown skies. Did you use any gradient in post?

Thanks. I would have to look at the edit as it was quite a while ago. I often use split toning particularly on highlights (sometimes on shadows but in landscape that can be too harsh) to bring the shot together. The eucalyptus trees are more of a muddy green colour than the conifer forests of the Northern Hemisphere.

Fair enough, split toning can do the job considering these colors. Thanks for bringing that up and gratz on the sale. Great shot.

It had a gray vibe with all the gray brown rocks; the split toning is enough just to tie the highlights into the same colour cast as the foreground mountains. It is quick to do in lightroom so I find it quite useful.

So were you actually two steps away from death here or is there some creative cropping? :)

I really hope it's the latter XD

I'm now curious as to the story behind the naming of Deception Point.

Well I was two steps away from the edge yes lol. As a rockclimber that is quite a long way from death ;-)

Nice shot with a crazy forecast tassie is stunning i wish i went...

Hope you get to Tassie one day.
