August ProgBlog #1: the fun part

in #aer4 months ago

This was supposed to be the last July ProgBlog but comp season started (that goes for a couple of months of very intense weekends) and then I got a bad chest infection (bastard thing broke my perfect attendance record, I stormed back to work the next day though I probably shouldn't have and it took its usual 2-3 weeks to bugger off) and then my parents came to town for a visit, so it's now the first and possibly last August ProgBlog (because comps on days I normally project work and no other day I can sub).

vaguely related, my group did great, as did 17yo and her best friend, 19yo was unable to do his first round due to injury but will be back with a vengeance next round, and the parents took us to Cirque du Soleil's Luzia which everyone thoroughly enjoyed

I generally like sculpting. The things I don't like are the struggle to get things smooth or to look right from all angles but that's why I have multiple windows.

And there's always the comedy of partially done things.

I'm very slowly working my way up multires levels. Basically you do as much as you can with the base mesh before you add the first level, then you do as much as you can on that level before you go up to the next one etc. So far I haven't needed more than 3 (I don't know if 0 counts as a level as it's the base mesh) and I would only do that for major characters/requests.

Unlike the other things I take forever on because I need to get it as right as possible to expediate other processes, this one takes a while because it just takes a while to get the character looking how I want.

And I don't actually know how to use the sculpt brushes (non-zero chance it could be my install but I'm 98% sure I'm just stupid) so I tend to just use sculptdraw for the most part and occasionally experiment with the other ones and sometimes they even do what I think they will.

It'll get there eventually. I'm hoping the hair will be easier this time, but it may also take a while again because I have played with the new hair system but can't remember what I did and knowing my luck it's probably changed since last time as it's been a while.

This post also appears on my blog.

Want a cameo character? If you interact frequently with me here (either on my posts or your posts or better yet both!) or on one of the linked Discord channels, all you have to do is let me know and tell me what you'd like :) Everything you need to know is (probably) here and if it isn't just ask (sorry the link goes offsite to my blog where the layout is how I want rather than the one here which is only here because the original one was).

Thanks for looking! ^_^

Well done on the comps! I'm sorry you've had a stupid chest infection... that super sucks! Hope you're feeling betterer! This blue demon guy is looking pretty good, love the light reflections in the eyes.

Thanks!

I hate comps, I'm very non-competitive x_x but I have to pretend it's a lot of fun and we're just showing off so that the competitive kids are happy to do them because it's a competition and the non-competitive kids are happy to do them just for funsies

I am doing better but I should also kind of want to see if the chest infections are actually making my lungs worse or if it's a temporary thing that happens after each one and it is actually healing up okay afterwards, as while it feels wrong even after the infection has cleared up, it always seems okay again by summer and continues being okay til next winter comes around and the cold air is starting to hurt and then rinse repeat if I get another one.

Thanks again, hoping i'll finish him (for the second time aaaaargh) in a...timely fashion x_x
