We live in an era of incredible specialization, nowadays if you want to be a cop you usually have to have a college degree that is only good for that and then go thought the academy and then do all sorts of professional development, and it is the same for a lot of things. With such a large time investment and not to mention the emotional investment and people's identities being tied to their careers the prospect of changing a career can be daunting for a lot of people.
