If Your Job Is Unethical Or Makes You Miserable, There Are Always Other Options Out There

"Just Doin Mah Job"

I have noticed this strange trend where people have these strange attachments to specific jobs, as if there is ONE job out there for them, and they can't seem to conceive ever finding another job.

I find this especially true in jobs that some people consider to be unethical, such as cops, government agents or jobs that harm the environment. "it creates jobs" or "im just doing my job" is not a valid excuse to violate people's rights or trash the environment, but it seems to be an acceptable excuse in our society.

I notice the same mentality in friends who are unhappy with their jobs for various reasons...

People always talk about the difficult job market and the lack of opportunities, and this is true to some extent, but most of these limitations are in people's own heads, because they are afraid of taking a leap of faith and would rather settle for something that is comfortable, but also is either unethical or just makes them miserable.

I've been an author, rave promoter, truck driver, mortician, food server, tech support, and never stayed at a job I didn't like or that I felt was unethical (i quit the funeral industry for this reason)

Jobs are out there and it is possible to start your own business (despite massive regulations which do make it harder)

The economy is bad, and that does make it more difficult, it does create more obstacles, but some of the biggest obstacles we face are the limitations of our own mind.

You are very correct, sometimes they will hurt you and at the end, they come with this 'i am just doing my job" story

"But most of these limitations are in people's own heads."

Nowadays it is easy enough to study part-time online, either formally or informally. Having a job already can help to pay for tuition fees or even starting a business.

But I would just add that it isn't necessarily true for people in more desperate circumstances and countries.

We live in an era of incredible specialization, nowadays if you want to be a cop you usually have to have a college degree that is only good for that and then go thought the academy and then do all sorts of professional development, and it is the same for a lot of things. With such a large time investment and not to mention the emotional investment and people's identities being tied to their careers the prospect of changing a career can be daunting for a lot of people.

People always talk about the difficult job market and the lack of opportunities, and this is true to some extent, but most of these limitations are in people's own heads, because they are afraid of taking a leap of faith and would rather settle for something that is comfortable, but also is either unethical or just makes them miserable.

Thats the spirit. Thats the right attitude. Ability to blend well through changing circumstances and not being rigid.
this is simply a nice post.

Great post! Great advice!
At least being steemien is not unethical, but enjoyable.
Not always you can do what you love to do, but you always have to put food on the table. It’s tough these days and it will get tougher.

They’re essentially parroting military speak, in which case people do in fact have to do things “because it’s their job” or be liable to the military justice system(you don’t want that.)

Cops on the other hand do have a much wider range of ways to handle situations though, and since they(usually) aren’t under direct supervision, one of those options is to often overlook things if they aren’t harming anyone/harming anyone other than the person who may be ingesting something.

Bottom line, I don’t think that anarchy is a viable form of government. And it’s certainly not the way that this country was meant to be run. Some form of law enforcement is required. As it stands, if the police were to disappear tomorrow, horrible things would happen to a lot of little old ladies that very night.

But if they were to overlook things that don’t matter and only waste money in the long run, maybe less of us would hate them...

Some of us have jobs not corrupt and still its all we know. Still i agree with what you wrote. Simple and to the point. Great job and thanks for sharing.

Agreed. As I have gotten older I have found that I have little patience for job that makes me unhappy. I recently quit my serving job because my manager was condescending towards the staff. Everyday. I stuck it out through the holidays and that was hard. It felt really good to tell her how I felt when I quit. I had never quit a job like that before. It was liberating.
