Hope everyone is well.

'Last Red Rose of the Season' paintings are based on the delightful red David Austin rose, 'Munstead Wood '.

This rose was a splendid model in the painting of three rather large Christ-mas cards.

The 'bird' in the first painting (do you see him...loosely rendered in the right hand corner) was not anticipated....as a result a second painting was quickly in the works to see if a bird could be developed and integrated into the flower....and then painted one more time....resulting in three completed paintings, each a little different and yet their own painting.

Let this post be my Christ-mas card to Hive this year. ----Thank you for your participation in the comments here at Bleujay's, dialoguing with regard to the Principles/Timeless Truths....I could not ask for more...thank you!

Materials used, Watercolour paper 300lb Fabriano Cold Press, Winsor&Newton Watercolour tubes....professional grade...Derwent Watercolour pencils, Caran d'Ache Watercolour Crayons, Pencils 6&8b.

Size.... 28cm X 19cm/11in X 7.5in

You know I am a 70 year old person, and at this point in my life, decided to look for something nice to do, and chose to learn how to paint landscapes. So far a lady teaches me how to sketch directly from a reference. I am a teacher, and what I might know is the basics in terms of colors and irregular strokes. To answer to your query of advise for a new Art student.

If one desires to become an artist....

*They need the three D's; Desire, Determination, Dedication.

*They need an instructor....(so happy to hear you have one....choose one that paints similiar to the style, you desire to learn.)

*They need to practice everyday.

Best Practice: is to use your own reference material...subject matter which you photographed yourself.

Hope this assists in this new journey for you.

Principle: It's an elephant, one bite at a time.

You have given the world a wonderful Christmas card.
The connection with Christmas is direct, because Jesus Christ is compared to a rose trampled into the mud, as sung in one of my favorite Christian hymns.
Probably this red bird, born from a rose petal, symbolizes that the withering of roses is only a short period of time before their new blossoming, because migratory birds return from warm lands in the spring :)
