Things Are Sometimes Black And White

in #art8 months ago
Hi again !
Well... we made it through Monday, didn't we? WHEW .... another week has begun.
Last night after I clocked off of work, I checked my net world for a few, fed myself even though I wasn't really hungry and almost took a nap. I wanted too, I felt like I needed one, but this time, I resisted. I kept trying to think of things that would perk me up, because for real, there is so much that needs to be done and then there is so much I want to do. It was nearly dizzying trying to figure out where to start. Some laundry needed to be folded, the dishwasher needed to be loaded, the vanity in the loo needed a good wiping down... and so on and so on....
.....so of course I went over to my art desk, put on my apron, looked around and thought.... what's next ?? 🤣
Before I get into that part, isn't this neat? This is a piece of a brown paper bag that I had under my art that I made last night. After I used a stencil, I would lay it here and take a dry sponge and wipe off all the excess paint I could. I would drag the sponge across the stencil and it would pull the paint into the open spaces, making their design there too. I did not stencil directly on this paper. Afterwards I thought it had a little bit of a graffiti vibe. Is it just me ??

Anyway, throughout the videos that I've been watching many of the other people doing collages or mixed media pieces of some kind, nearly always want some sort of black design somewhere for contrast or the such. I hadn't made anything much black, so I decided last night would be a black and white session.
I pulled out 4 or 5 different types of paper and cut them in half instead of doing whole sheets this time. I painted the first piece completely black and on a second sheet, I just added some swishes of black. I knew when these two dried, I would do something else too them.

Later, this is what I stenciled with white, over the solid black sheet above. I'll show you what I did with the other one later. As you can see, I used my favorite stencil on the left. It was not big enough to do the whole sheet, so I chose the circle stencil to fill in the other side of the paper.

I started making circles on this one with a gallon water jug lid.

It turned out like this. Simple, but some torn or cut parts of it might make an interesting tidbit on some piece later.

I did this one also with an oval highlighter cap and a square lipstick top.

I play wrote with a calligraphy pin that had a little blue in the cartridge. There wasn't much left though. Then I tried to dip the nib in black paint and write too, but that didn't work so hot. LOL

Later I stenciled the slanted design over it. I like seeing some writing between the lines. I might have to get more cartridges for the pin. It might come in handy later.

More stencil'y fun.

Now back to this one.....

20240318_212438_HDR.jpg

I stenciled black overlapping ovals in white down part of the left side. Then at the bottom I finished out in pink, because I was curious how that would work. I didn't like it ! Not even a little part of it.

I added water to the little bit of black paint that was in a cup and lightly black-washed the whole thing to see if it would help. It might have helped it a little. Not sure what kind of weird piece any part of it would go one.... but there it is. The good thing is, just because I make a painty paper, doesn't mean I ever really have to use it. Thank goodness !

I stopped around 9:45 and here are the papers as a group.

A shot of my work area after I stood up, with the fun residual designs on the brown paper and the black and white painty papers across the back.
When I finished my playing, I rescued the brown paper from the desk so I wouldn't get anything else on it. I don't know what I will use it for later, but maybe something will come to mind.

Hope everyone's week started well and the rest of it is amazing.
Love you ! ❤️

My favourites are the black circles on the white background. I love how simple designs can be so effective.

You've got some seriously big stencils by the look of the impressions on the brown paper. 😃

Hello !

I liked them better than I thought I would when I decided to just use black and white. I think a tear or strip of most of them "might" be interesting if they fell in just the right place. We'll see eventually if I figure out where the right place is. ha

The one on the right is little less than 5 inches wide and slightly more than 9 inches tall, but that probably includes all their borders. As you can see on the impression, the top of those have a little extra space with a hole so you can put them on a ring or hang them some way if you want. The other two are in a "border" set that is probably about 3 x 11.

I only owned about 3 before I got into this recently. They are almost like a normal sheet of paper size, but when I had used them before, I had cut a section out of them so they would be easier to handle. I don't think I'll be cutting any of the newer ones.... but that is today, who knows about tomorrow ? !

Ah. They are not as long as they look in the photo then. Must be the angle.

I had a phase of buying stencils and then made a few of my own. I've not bought any for a while now but then I'm not buying anything new.

I have one of my paintings in the hallway that is black and white. Back in the early days I followed an art prompt to use colours you wouldn't normally use and I chose black and white. Like you I surprised to find I actually liked it. So much so that I had it framed and hung it in the house.

You never know how things will turn out. That's what makes it so much fun for me. 😍

When I only had 3 or 4 stencils, I put them in a 3 ring binder. I took a sheet protector, put a colored sheet of paper in it and then slid one stencil in front and one in back. That way they were a little protected and I could still see them easily. I am semi-sort-of wonder if I might do them all like that..... but not sure. I did "borrow" the photos from Amazon from the pages where I bought them and put them in a file, so if I wanted to use one, but could not remember what all I had, I could just click the file open and look through, instead of shuffling the actual stencils all around. I thought that was kind of brilliant. LOL.....

My loves are so colorful, I'm not sure how a black and white could make it to a wall here, but I have seen some I thought were very attractive all the same. Never know though... one day. I have seen many art pieces that had a hit of the black and white that really popped.

More things to try.... more fun to be had !

I used to do the same with stencils and then I got one that was too long for the file and it sort of fizzled out. Also I have sets that are in a single packet bu, like you, I really liked being able to just flip thorugh the file rather than digging through them. Alo, I find that they get tangled and easily damaged when just in a pile. Maybe I'll find myself revisiting the file method if I have a stencil sort of day during The 100 Day Project. 😁

Always more things to try . . . more fun to be had.

Nice works
I love black and white designs
It always looks good

Thank you !

They were certainly fun to make.

Thanks for stopping over ! 😊

Anytime friend 😊

I just followed you

Thank you...

Would be nice if you follow back 😉

I quite like the pinky bottomed one for the contrast it gives!

A small bit of it might look good in just the right place I suppose. Most of the times I have seen something that included black, it wasn't the majority of the piece whatever artist was making, but just an accent or focal point of a sort, so there's always some chance that a portion of it could go perfectly somewhere.

You never know!! I do like black and the contrast it always adds and of course it's evilness!! 😀😀
