From Broken To Beautiful-The Ancient Art Of Kintsugi

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

I discovered this new(for me) type of art the other day and I wanted to share it with you, I think it's incredible!

It's called Kintsugi and it originated in Japan and has been practiced for 9,000 years! It turns ordinary pottery and ceramics which have been broken, into unique and beautiful pieces of art.

It's still being done today using traditional methods which consist of taking a lacquer made from the sap of a tree that grows in East Asia and combining it with gold dust. They also use silver and platinum dust.

The results are stunning! Each piece is unique and striking with it's own patterns.

It's also practical. If you accidentally break your favorite mug, no problem!

Part of the Japanese philosophy behind Kintsugi is to not try to hide the damage but to improve on the piece by showing the damage as part of it's history.

This bowl was shattered into bits, think of the patience this repair took!

A fine but plain bowl into a work of art:

After the pieces are reassembled they're held in place with tape:

Even fine porcelain can be saved:

If a piece is missing you can insert another similar size piece from another item:

What do you guys think? You can order the Kintsugi kits online made with the traditional ingredients of the tree sap and no chemicals or glues.

This is one artform I reckon I could do. I think. I don't have an artistic bone in my body but I have alot of patience and this doesn't take creativity!

This would have been very handy for me to know when my parents were alive and used to brain each other with every piece of crockery in the house.

oh no! But then you would have beautiful pieces that you wouldn't ever want broken again and they'd break those too!

This post makes me beautifully broken

lol. Well there ya go sirbearbear. Your imperfections can become beautiful!

I love the philosophy of perfection through imperfection <3

Me too tamaralovelace, it is excellent and full of grace!

I've known about this forever and a day and the analogy behind it is so spectacular. We can use it in every day life too. What a beautiful post you've done about it. Love it!!

Howdy dkkarolien! Thanks so much and I agree about the philosophy. Have you see this in South Africa?

Hi @janton. 😊 No haven't seen it personally but I've read about it many years ago and quotes and articles have crossed my party many times so I've read about it a lot. I just love the idea of it.

I do too dkkarolien, I think it's brilliant and the philosophy that goes along with it!

Hi @janton. This is a masterpiece. From imperfections come perfection. The value of the righteously broken spirit comes to mind

Howdy sir princeprincewill! I agree, I almost went into that but I was in a hurry and people like short posts. lol.

Hello Mr. Janton! I am seriously considering breaking a mug or a bowl just to do this.

I really think it would be a fun challenge to try, I would order one of those kits and break something and hope it didn't shatter into tiny pieces! You could do posts about your efforts too!

😯😊🤗 !!!!

Absolutely beautiful ....!!!! beautiful ..
beautiful !!! Most skillful and wonderful art pieces..
Truly Incredible...!

Really neat! Who knew fixed pottery would look so nice!

Howdy sir ironshield! I agree, I was floored by their beauty and unique designs.

Now that's a neat art. I like to repurpose found wood and carve it (occasionally - I dont' have too much time to do that anymore), but this takes fixing things to an entirely new level.

Howdy sir wwwiebe! Oh, you should post about some carvings you've done! I agree though, this stuff is incredible.

Hi janton, a beautiful craft. Just like broken hearts they can be put back together again too.

I agree angiemitchell, it works with humans too doesn't it?

Although I don't think there are such creative designs on people's hearts, lol.

Well that's a good point, some designs on people's hearts we wouldn't want to see!

I think most people would find it easier to just ditch the broken porcelain.
Japanese people are very patient and creative. Good on them to think of this kintsugi thingy. I knew of the art, but I didn't realise they have been around for so long.

Like you don't have patience sir Vincent! That's a good one!

These are amazing pictures. Those broken pieces — wow. It’s cool that someone was able to put them all togetheroî

Howdy jayna! I agree, I think it's a wonderful artform and practical too like if you break your grandmother's fine China or something, all is not lost!

So true, @janton. That's a very good way to look at it!

Absolutely brilliant and beautiful. Hope you are well @janton👏🙏

Howdy clitadias! Thank you and yes things are going great!

The pottery does look nice with the gold covering the previous cracks.

I don’t think it’s wise to drink out of that mug, I wouldn’t eat or drink out of anything with a scratch or crack as particles from the finish could get into your system.

Howdy redheadpei! Wise advice and well taken. Are the leaves turning colors up there yet?

Evening Cowboy! Alas, summer is over but fall is always pleasant. The leaves are starting to turn. Do you get the fall colors where you are?

I'm sure there are some trees in parts of Texas that change colors but on our property we have pine, evergreens and cedar trees and they all stay green year round! lol. So it's pretty boring compared to everywhere else in the Fall.

Some looks cool!

I forgot the name of your hairy cactus, is it Harry? lol. anyway, he would look good in one of these!

Very cool! I'd like to have one of those kits handy. This puts me in mind of all the precious stuff I broke and cried over. It feels tragic that I could have made them even more precious by considering the damage as part of it's history rather than throwing them away.

Well you probably had no way to prepare them in such a way though. But in the future you'll know a way. I like that the kit I saw had traditional ingredients with no chemicals and it used the sap from that tree that has been used for centuries.

very practical and beautiful! Wanted to stop in and say hello :0)

Howdy there sugarcreek! I forgot about you, sorry! lol. have you been posting?

No worries! I have been totally overwhelmed with going back to work and our projects needed to move! So I've not been posting. Just popping in to say hi.

Howdy sugarcreek! So glad that you stopped by..where are you working?

Good Mornin! Oh, I am in retail management counting down days to get out. LOL, Not many good-paying jobs in this area when I moved here so I had to go for highest pay. Planning to get my gardens started this summer. This is my first morning on the new land! Coffee watching horses out my window would be heaven if this rain would stop!! Be well my friend!

Oh wow yeah. It gives it a mosaic look. I like it!!!!!!!!

Thanks @janton.

If Humpty Dumpty's people (All the Kings Horses & All the Kings Men) would have known about this...... Old Egg Head would still be on the wall, even after that "Great Fall"

lol! Brilliant sir krazzytrukker! lol.

That's kind of a cool looking technique. I'm guessing the gold dust would be a little on the expensive side!

I should have priced gold dust for that post, I have no idea! lol. It can't be cheap though and I guess the repaired pieces are valuable too, depending on how many cracks get filled!

Absolutely love it!!!

Howdy again Miss Lena! I'm so glad you like these. Now you know what to do if you break something!

Long time no see Janton. Have a great week sir.

Howdy sir dandays! what is that new profile image??? I been thinking about you for the last few days, honestly, thinking I gotta get over to your blog. You're posting like crazy huh? the hardfork made you speed up!

I been working offline like crazy so I've not been around to many regular friends on here.

Working offline how? Like, around the house?

Yeah, the new avatar. I changed my profile image and stuff, just a minor account make over. Pura isn’t on anymore so I figured I’d take her image down.

Plus I’ve had a few comments in the past two year because of it which makes me feel bad for women actually, so it’s been something I’ve been wanting to change for awhile.

Hope you like it.

It's very unique but I need a better look at it. It's a person standing in front of a DNA strand?

What is it that made you feel bad for women? I don't know what that means. Why did your much better half stop? Did she just step back for awhile or did she quit?

Yes, outside work on patios, fences, cars, mowing, mowers, painting, etc etc, Mrs. J is not the biggest fan of crypto or steemit so she wants me to get the place in shape, repaired, restored, replaced, and so on. In other words, get some work done instead of playing around on steemit all day!

Sounds like she may be a little koo-koo. 😉

Not that I feel bad for women, I understand how they’re looked at, I AM a man, after all. But that’s not it, I’ve received a couple of messages in the past about what that person thinks of my avatar thinking I was Pura. Harmless but still unwarranted. So I changed it.

Yeah, a double helix, a D and A, like Pura and I. Like “Dandays.”

She’s just kinda over Steemit. She hung out for awhile because I had her talked into it. She’s just over it now. All the same people, all the same topics. The only difference now is you have some whales upvoting the same monotonous content.

Howdy today sir dandays! I quit steemit early yesterday so that's why this reply is late. I get it about being over steemit. I still find tons of fascinating content everyday on different topics, a mind-blowing variety actually, so I guess it depends on where you look. Or, maybe I have low standards! lol.

The hardfork and whales getting fatter is kinda hard to take too. Makes you wonder if the next hardfork will be even worse on the little guys.

Oh, so the username Dandays is something to do with DNA or has a scientific meaning?

D and A, just like that as in mine and hers. That’s how I started this account anyway, but I control it all the time. She’s a lot of the influence though.

My rep is actually building finally since the new hard fork. And I’m finally getting decent rewards for my posts. Who knows.. we’ll see how long it lasts.

Great post @janton and beautiful examples! I saw someone do this with a broken geode. It was done with silver and looked awesome. 😉

Oh, very interesting deerjay! I never thought of that use but that would be beautiful also!
