Hey @jonny-clearwater! I noticed your mention and decided to give this challenge a shot. The 4-color palette did enough to limit my creativity and I was unable to come up with anything.

I was watching a Fist Full Of Dollars the other day and it started with this brilliant sequence. It reminded me alot of Red Dead Redemption which is my favorite game. The film itself is a masterpiece I might add. So I decided to pay tribute to both the movie and the film. I'll be watching the rest of the Dollars Trilogy today haha.

This is the longest animation I have done, at 21 frames. I have wanted to draw something western for a long time and with that spark of inspiration, I instantly got to work. I know the artist should leave his artwork up for interpretation but I couldn't help it. The way I see it, This artwork paints a picture of the harsh and brutal frontier life with the blood-red sky hinting at the huge amount of blood spilt unlawfully and unnecessarily, while the tumbleweed represents the loneliness of a wanderer in the hot desert. My "shadow-drawing skills" are very rusty but as I've said, this contest is a good motivator for practice. Sorry for the wall of text, hope you enjoy it.

I hope editing your entry is still allowed.

Ok...strange...just watched Fist Full of Dollars last night!

Hmm that is strange indeed...

I've been doing this whole 'must see movies before you die' with my teenager and that was on my list

Add The Untouchables to that list if it's not already on. Also The Sting

Don't forget to resteem and upvote the post to make your entry "official"

Here's my entry!

It's 80s themed, Elvis look-alike dancing to music. I am entering one of your contests for the first time, let's see how it goes.

Thanks for your consideration!

wow that's really something. your entry is miles better than mine lol. im pretty sure you'll get selected in the top 3.

Thank you for your kind words @infinitor , I had a lot of fun making this crazy thing :)

I see we need to add a rule to exclusie professional pixelartists next time. Superb work there mate.

Great concept!I love pixel art so thanks for hosting this contest @jonny-clearwater. I didn't realize how difficult it was going to be for me to only use 4 colors. But I found a little loophole where I was able to create a "fifth" shade with a dot pattern of one of the four colors overlaying on the other. Hopefully it still qualifies! I've been working on for the past 3 hours. :) Since this is my first entry I thought I'd draw something that represents me. Since I'm from San Diego I thought it would be appropriate to draw a surfer.

Yeah awesome colour pallette, dude you've still got plenty of time, you should give it a go at animating. Leave the sky how it is just the waves and the dude bobbing up an down.

I'll definitely give it a shot! Thanks for the suggestion :)

Man... If this was animated....whoooo

if I animated it, do you think I'd win? :)

I know this... You'd have a better shot of being in the top 3. I give bonus cookies for animated pieces

You've done a great job though and the pallette is fantastic.

wow, this is awesome (y)

That's awesome. If you can get that animated then it's a serious contender

Don't forget to upvote and resteem the post for your entry to be "official"

btw, using a dithering to create a '5th' color is exactly how you would go about it without going beyong 4 colors. it's still 4 colors isn't it. It's just perceived as more. Well done.

That said, there appears to be some sort of anti-aliasing in your image which makes it have way more then 4 colors.
Also, the transparency gradient of the dithering (the sky dots) makes it way more than 4 as well.

this is how it should look I think in 4 color ....

did steemit do something to compression ?

It's fantastic!

Thanks! It was fun to make, I didn't even know of these Pixel art Steemit stuff going on, following of course now and will be seeing more

If you can... Could you scale him up just a lil bit so he's easier to see

Done and done!

Here is the original size I made it in

Btw.... You do have to resteem the post for your entry to be "official"
I was just checking out your profile, man I used to comic book so hard.

Done!

I just saw the post you did with him... If you could make one with 3 sizes dancing in a line (not the largest) that would be awesome

Re-load the original post and be amazed! Or amused! Or confused! lol, either way I got a second dancing line in there. I have no idea why but it actually makes me giggle, now I see how hamster dance worked.

My entry: Hulk Out!

Hulk out!

you did that since the post went up ?
That's brilliant !
out

Lolz, cheers dude! I voted for you last week right, the rocket with the awesome smoke, that's what made me follow this contest. Dude just enter! There's still a Few days left. Even if its just something small.

yeah I will enter. Will probably be something small though, got hit with manFlu, so I was out first half of the week/

ah that sucks, get well soon man!

thanks man, already feeling a bit better, though my nose is still running like Niagara

Hi thank you for making this contest! :D
This is my entry (includes the full process) : https://steemit.com/art/@kristyglas/pixel-art-weekly-contest-entry-magical-forest

@jonny-clearwater, should I post it on the new post as well, or will there be an update? :D

This is the correct post.
Midweek post is simply made in hopes to raise the prize pool for the contest

Thank you for reply :)

So many great entries ... well, here's my one night's effort ... damn you guys are good ...

1x
4XolorCreature1x

2x
4ColorCreature

4x
4XolorCreature4x

You all are making it very difficult to pick a top 3
Great entry!
If you can share a slightly scaled up version also, that would be awesome. I just want people to get a better view of it.

There, the 1st one I posted was already 2x, so I added 1x and 4x

Would you be interested in donating your "PAW" stamp? Or perhaps even considering using it to create an image for the contest. Currently I've been using the same image each week that says pixel art contest.... And it would be awesome to have an image that didn't belong to league of legends.com lol

Fantastic. Thank you.

no sweat. Think I might do that default from now on. Always like 2x versions

I like when people go as big as they can while maintaining the quality and then embed the 1x size in the corner.

Just awesome man! Wish I could use this one as an avatar!

Really good job!!

Eqko! Killed it dude! How do I upvote this x10!!! Well done!!!!

Here's my entry :)
I know it's not really that good, but it is my first attempt on making pixelart :)

to-the-moon!.gif

It's very cute and nice use of logo :D

Wow dude. I wold have no idea how to do something like this. Very cool! Sorry I have like a %10 power in my voting. I just voted too much lately. But vote I shall!!!!!! I obey.

So here is my entry. It's the first time i am participating. Thank you for hosting the contest.

Well today i drew a sprite of a skeleton to my game, you can check out the timelapse here. This is the 4 color version of the original. I already submitted the mushroom to the contest, so i guess this image does not count, but i just want to share another 4 color art.

Here is my attempt at a monkey pixel art gif :) @JONNY-CLEARWATER

Looking for the following to compete this week...
@infinitor
@circuitshark
@puppyfight
@artwatch
@shayne
@mikkolyytinen

Ok - I really tried to do my best at making things pixel art as possible- my corner that I animated to the mandalas was 60x60 in size... If it is not pixel enough please specify what methods I need to be doing for this to be pixel work. I think it is ...but I felt like my type of pixel work isn't accepted last week? I am new to this so if there is a specif program or size I need to be working in please tell me so I can learn and know what I am doing wrong ...or if only certain pixel art is accepted. I don't want people to be upset with me when I don't know what it is that I am doing wrong. I really try to learn and I just want to showcase my skills where ever I can as an artist.
4colorsgif.gif

Also -if people see this down here give it an upvote - I have no time to hussle for votes in the chat, I am busy making content for steemit... and I don't want to spam my followers for votes... so if it is good- its good -give it a vote. If not I'll see you next week.

There are so many.
Try this, it's free.
http://www.piskelapp.com/
Give this a watch also...

In the contest rules next you can specify to use these programs or size types and give a description of what type of pixel art qualifies?

The rules define pixel art.
You can find a definition here..
https://www.techopedia.com/definition/8884/pixel-art
As for the software, you can use 100s... There are tons to choose from, I merely provided an option for you.
There's actually a great sale on Steam right now for Aesprite... You can find that here...
http://store.steampowered.com/app/431730/Aseprite/
However, the option I have previously provided you is free and very user friendly.
As for size, there are no restrictions.

"created and edited at the pixel level using a graphics editing software. What defines pixel art is its unique visual style, where individual pixels serve as the building blocks that make up the image. The effect is a visual style very similar to that of mosaic art, cross-stitch" Ok so because I made the animation at very small size - 60x60 but animated it using photoshop it is ok? It still counts just must be pixel. Because I am worried about using photoshop if that is not what others are using.

@circuitshark
Would you care to put your two cents in?
I know this is something that matters to you

I think your previous entry was pretty cool, it reminded me of a game's intro cinematic. Photoshop should be alright, I've seen it used as a pixel art tool before

With sprites there's very little smooth shading involved usually, since it's so hard to keep track of individual colors when movement gets involved

hm interesting challenge, 4 colors ... need to think about this.

I hope I'm not too late :)
Here is my entry:

Good luck all :)

Late Entry: Dracula

Mwah-ah-ah....

I hope you teach me how to make an amazing tree like that.

Great job!

Thank you, maybe i'll do tutorial someday :D

Did my own pixel art last year whilst I was bored. Happy Toking!

I vow to pay more attention to this even if I don't have any visual art ability. I'm 8-bit at heart!

Congrats to @praful!! I like the new theme, it's gonna be fun thinking of something for this one!

I love your pixel art Jonny! Yet I do not even know where to start in case I want to try doing my own. Which program are you using?

If only I had an artistic bone in my body :'(

I could do a stick man!?!?!?!?

^^

I can't wait to see the entries. This one should be interesting.

How much did @praful win?

Have to wait until the posts clear, but I guaranteed 100SBD prize.

Cool! Congrats to him/her!

You on chat anywhere? Have a question... Want your opinion.

Just on my phone right now, type it in and I'll answer when I read it.

Don't want to do this in comments

I meant the chat of course..

Great pixel art.

Cool, that's a good theme.

Hope to see you compete in this one!

Just found this - Well done! I better get to work! Resteemed!

I don't even have words to describe how good these are!

@jonny-clearwater I think I went WAY overboard on my entry... But that's just part of being overkillcoin. Stay tuned! :D

I've always wanted to try my hand at this style but I'm not familiar with the specs. Like what is considered the thresh hold for the file setup? I'd love to participate. Just want to set set the parameters up right. Thanks in advance for anyone willing to take a second and gimme the lowdown!

I recommend trying out Pyxel Edit, as there is a free version.
If you want to do small items, 16x16 is a good start for practice.
For environments I usually work at around 150pix width or height. Anything smaller than that may be better for beginners. So you get used to simplifying what you see, like trees, stones and items in general. Photo reference helps to get started, afterwards its much easier to experiment even without any reference.

Thank you very much for the info! I'll have to give this a shot :)

Hi, I just remembered.
This guy makes amazing pixel art tutorials
:D
