AskSteemit #8: What's something that has blown your mind regarding blockchain technology?

in #asksteemit7 years ago

Since Steem is one of the best newbie friendly currencies out there and has introduced so many to this great tech and its very own even greater technology, I thought it would be a good time to discuss how other users see the blockchain.

Having been involved myself for quite some time, ever since Bitcoin, the waves of altcoins that started appearing after Litecoin and so on, it feels a bit like I've come to the stage where I take for granted many of its functions and advantages. It also gets hard to see things from a newcomers perspective spending most of my time here lately and reading more about News, following developments and researching up and coming projects.

That's why I would like to hear things from a different perspective every now and then and I thought this would be a good time for it. It doesn't matter if you are a newcomer or have been around even before Steem.

I want to hear what blockchain means to you personally. What you find so mind-blowing about it compared to everything before and so on.

Leave a comment down below, in these #AskSteemit posts I reward good discussions more than usual.

Well the first coin that I've come across and invested in was dogecoin, so that puts me around 2013/2014.

What I really hope people to grasp is the complete change in paradigm made possible by the Blockchain technology, similar to how TCP/IP irreversibly changed society. Websites rise and fall but the internet is there to stay, just the same way as coins will come up and disappear if the fundament isn't sound. But the blockchain will be the foundation which future apps be built upon.

I am not fazed by price rise and fall because that is not where the attention should be put at. "stupid money" (as I like to call them) is doing exactly what stupid money did back in the dotcom boom.

For starters, almost everything we humans are doing that involves records and consensus can be migrated to the blockchain where it will. Be vastly superior to the current method of doing things. Money (duh), databases, shareholding, ownership, voting (no country's done it yet but we already have a living proof of concept alive and kicking), and 1001 other things people have not come up with.

"bitcoin is a fad" is technically true. Simply because the attention towards it is just so overrated. I'm not saying the price though, I'm saying the attention. People didn't go nuts for Swiss banks just because they were the best store of value prior to blockchain.

The best investment one can make during this "hype" is by understanding and learning how the God damn thing works. No stupid money can trump the value of understanding what the blockchain is. The true winners of dotcom aren't the stupid money that saw 10000% ROI, the true winner are the geeks that drop out of schools and start making shit with the internet. Even if well after the hype. Same for blockchain.

So yea, that's supposed to be the mindset of someone wanting to know more about blockchain. Not the potential investment profit. Because as soon as they only think money on table. They've lost.

The amount of transparency and what this could mean for businesses, governments and users in the future. I believe transparency and open source are the way to go. If you look at countries that are doing well one of the things they have in common is the low amount of corruption. Blockchain technology takes this a step further. It is impossible for an app that is fully decentralised (dapp) to be corrupt. When corruption is low, creativity and innovation flourish. I think blockchain technology is a platform for huge growth and innovation to come.

Very well put!

Great initiative! I will keep working on trying to add value to this wonderful platform

I think that we will be in for a PR war between cryptocurrencies and fiat currencies (central banks) to win the support of the people, the users "money". I am very eager to see how China, a centrally planned economy with very strict currency controls, responds to cryptocurrencies, or potentially adopting blockchain technology on a national scale.

Yes that would be interesting. I think governments will be the last to switch over. Maybe some smaller countries will do some experimenting with their own crypto currencies. It is easier for a smaller country to make a change of this scale.

I think there will be a long transition period where both fiat and crypto will live next to each other. Eventually becoming fully assimilated by cryptos where fiat will be home to museums.

Another question would be how a government would implement a crypto, as crypto currencies tend to be decentralised by nature. A government has more merit from using a centralised version.

My prediction is that we will see Industry/Cartel crypotcurrencies. Imagine what would happen if OPEC banded together and created a centrally control blockchain similar to ripple. Something that couldn't be mined but could be controlled. The US Dollar would lose a substantial amount of power.

Thats a Great commnts i wish you are great @juliank

I find it mindblowing, or maybe not so much, that such a large and diverse group of people can govern themselves with such a great amount of decorum even when views and opinions are so widespread. Even at opposite ends of the spectrum, the opinions are discussed so that a widespread group jumps in and comes to some form of consensus without too much fighting and name calling. Current flag wars aside :)

The fact that electric currency has been created and can be traded anywhere in the world. I have taught my cousins in Pakistan about this and it blows my mind that they can use it too

The most fascinating thing to me is the opportunity to dream and start working on creating a smartcity from scratch that's powered by blockchain tech.

Without blockchain and cryptocurrency, I will kill the dream the moment it surfaces because achieving it using the traditional means can as well be related to a horse trying to enter the mouth of a needle.

Everything about blockchain to me is opportunity, wealth, revolutionary and entertaining.

Yes, its blockchain (or HashGraph) tech that is going to make an RBE and smartcities (cities based on systems design, aka the Venus Project) a realistic possibility, where no one can screw with the real time data and knowledge base and systems operations,,, as they will be locked in the Graph/Chain.

Yeah man, I was just reading something closely related few minutes ago and everything is just becoming interesting daily.

Do you have enough experience with HashGraph? @i-am-mark

None, just been learning about it,,, seems pretty simple and straight forward,,, as opposed to POS or POW scenarios.

Hey @bania you're right that i with you

Well, there are a few things:

  • My brain explodes when I read statements from government sources (in my country) about how they will create their own cryptocurrency. Or how and when they will come up with a law on the regulation of existing cryptocurrencies. They only see the money, but do not see the technology, and don't want to use it for other tasks.

  • My brain explodes from the possibility once and for all get rid of any frauds and scams (almost in any field) using this technology, and at the same time it allows you to hide any information.

  • My brain is exploding that we all use this technology primarily to make money. Every blockchain project and every user of these projects, the focus is primarily on earnings. I can't say that it is bad (still, I'm here) but I think we are moving in the wrong direction.

  • My brain explodes from the fact that more and more people know about the blockchain, but don't know what is it, how it works, although it's possible that just a few years our whole life will be built on it.

Hey ! I think your points are well explained but the last one is how it will be in 5-10 years from now, if the cryptos go mainstream and a large chunk of the population uses it, only a few geeks will understand it. Just take a look at the Internet, or the radio. It was reserved for aficionados and tech lovers and geeks ebfore it reaches the overall world, and even then, no one understand how radio or TV or Internet works properly. And too many peeps don't care about it hence the trouble to make them understand the Net Neutrality principle.

Partly you are right about the example with the TV and radio, but, consider that these technologies have never been closely linked with your personal data, while blockchain in theory and in the long term, will be a key information about you as a citizen and about all your money.

This is more fascinating thin in steemit blockchain. Introducing more smart options and features from developers team with high technology. There are more cryptos has. But Bitcoin has been priority currency module in this platform. Its always dumping and pumping i think when i search market capitalization. In fact how will i trust BTC? What about next planning currency? Smart media token will be awesome with nice options.
Steemit had created most of opportunities to users to earn more rewards. Also we can have fun and enjoy here, recognize great worldwide friends, updating cryptocurrency market trends, good knowledge of some topics etc... Steemit platform giving all opportunities to their users. Much appreciated.

The fact that information stored in blockchain(e.g. blog posts in steemit) stay there forever amazes me. Also the idea of being unregulated by any central authority or government is cool. I believe that if blockchain is utilized in other aspects of our lives rather than just being a mode of transaction will revolutionize society.

It's really cool to see how blockchain can change the world, we are living in the prime of change.

I find it mind-blowing that there is so much interrest and value in just some 1 and 0 determined by the load of a nearly invisible small transistor somewhere in the world and that there are people here on steemit that can live only from posting and without any adds.

One of the things I saw that really encapsulated the future and some of its uses was seeing bitcoin being sent with a tweet. I thought that was such a cool thing to be able to do coupled with the fact all you had to do was download a wallet to store it. No hassle with opening bank account etc and can be sent anywhere in the world.

If I talk about 4-5 years ago.. there had been only few cryptocurrencies.. And now according to coinmarketcap list there is 1329 cryptocurrencies.. And day by day more cryptocurrency will be launched.. My question is.. is it good for the future of cryptocurency having so many cryotocurrecies in the market??

I believe so, of course all will not make it big or be worth it, but it adds to the decentralized aspect of it all.

Thanks for your opinion!

I would not consider all those new coins to technically be currencies. They are simply tradeable tokens. Eventually the nomenclature will exist to split the difference between a tradable token and a true currency.

My prediction is that we will see Industry/Cartel crypotcurrencies. Imagine what would happen if OPEC banded together and created a centrally control blockchain similar to ripple. Something that couldn't be mined but could be controlled. The US Dollar would lose a substantial amount of power.

There's a lot a find absolutely mind-blowing about cryptocurrency. It's why I murdered my GPU back in 2009 in attempts to mine BitCoin. The idea that PEOPLE can generate currency and trade it amongst themselves is amazing to me. Sure, there's abuse - it's easier to use supposedly untraceable currencies to pay for bad illegal things, but this shift in power from governments generating and controlling currency to people and the market being able to generate its own through the use of technology? That's some futuristic shit right there!

I've never purchased cryptocurrency. All I have in my bitcoin account I made posting on steemit about a year back. It's not a lot, but the first time I drew out cash from my bitcoin account at an ATM using a debit card, I was taken aback by the fact I was paid to write by PEOPLE rather than by corporations (who are the ones usually paying me to type a lot). It was a refreshing experience.

Hehe, I highly doubt you were mining BTC with GPU's in 2009. xD

didn't you read, she murdered her GPU! You can't mine with a dead GPU!!

All jokes aside, people and corporations are hardly different, its about purpose and intent, right now, you could almost buy votes because the platform offers curation rewards. Everyone wants a piece of the pie and will upvote you if your post breaks a certain dollar amount, and it reaches their feed!

There was an attempt. GPU died. I learned that some things are better left to people in cooler countries.

LOL rolling my eyes

The wide array of uses that the blockchain has. People keep finding new ways to use it. I’m pretty new to cryptos and slowly gaining an understanding of how absolutely incredible the blockchain truly is. On the tech side, I don’t consider myself very tech savvy but I get the just of things.

This technology is a paradigm shift, for the first time in history the success of a project depends on its users and not on a centralized authority which takes the profits. I don’t know how many cryptocurrencies will last in the long run but we are in exciting times at the moment.

What I like about the blockchain technology is the fast transaction. We can trade with coins and it gives an opportunity to earn money as small and as big as it can get and it just makes a big difference on how people would earn for themselves.

The thing that has blown my mind is the price of bitcoin, I remember reading about it when it started I thought it was a really cool thing, it never crossed my mind the price it would be today.

nice post anyway. I've talked about this with @rismanrachman, and our community. How can the steem and blockchain efface corruption in #indonesia . And all about that I compile in my late post, here is it

https://steemit.com/indonesia/@akbarrafs/film-in-viddsee-4-film-jumprit-singit-korupsi-steemit-dan-pemberantasan-dengan-blockchain-or-jumprit-singit-movie-corruption

When I came to know about cryptocurrency, it's started with of course bitcoin and then Ethereum, ripple, IOTA litecoin and so on. But then I came to know about blockchain , I hread this term many times before but never worried about what actually it is. But that moment when I came to know bitcoin and Ethereum are itself diff blockchain and Btc and Eth are tokens running on it, was really astonishing for me ☺

First time I logged into Dmania.lol and utopia.io , I realized the revolution has began. I used my steem account on both sites, i don`t know if anyone can comprehend how mind-blowing it was, cause i am imagining all the possible applications that are gonna come up in the future.

@acidyo Is it true that Bitcoin is decentralized yet if you are a corporation and have issued a crypto currency then that is not decentralized ??

One word "Steemit"

blockchain is future for me: everything is in a change, thoughts and ideas will change. I see a big potential on blokchain as an young economist,
I believe that economic and technological life will change with blockchain. |||| Blockchain is smart,be like blokchain

What BLOWS my mind the most is that there is a tech HashGraph that is superior to blockchain in many ways,,,, but its copyrights/pattents are being held closely by its creators,,,,, even worse they are selling products to the Credit Unions (see CULedger),,,,,

It BLOWS my MIND because for me this is the REVOLUTION where the MEEK (the GEEK) inherit the earth,,, with NO bloodshed,,, in TRUTH and JUSTICE......

Swilds..... what the hell are you doing???? Release a Public Graph "POST HASTE" please !!!!

Price swings are fascinating to me. And also the fact that since it is an unregulated market, manipulation is the norm. Dont get me wrong, I love the blockchain technology and im in for the long haul here, but I find it to be extremely manipulated with fake news, pump and dumps, hacks and so many other ways of manipulation. Lots of people fooling the market to get their quick profit now while they can, before it gets regulated.

And the best: it is not mainstream yet!

For me it would be all the things it could change. Mostly in the food industry putting it on the block chain I feel would be a massive step forward in our agriculture

I think the most mind blowing/intriguing part of blockchain technology is the possibility of use cases in nearly every industry. The transparency that it creates will be a big reason for its continued and increased use in the future.

Honestly, not much. I follow a lot of new technology and developments. For some reason it took me a long time to hear about SteemIt, but when I did, I wasn't surprised, because I had already heard about the blockchain. Putting a social network on it in a way is almost like a perfect fit. So when I heard about it a few times, I eventually decided to check it out.

Now that reality of this platform, that's more shocking. The only ways to discover new posts in the tabs up at the top, new, trending, and hot, and your friends. Naturally this leads to a lot of what becomes successful on the platform being a matter of who you know. Someone has to magically stumble on to your post. But without the platform even having a way to do so, people formed communities where they upvote together, to make sure quality content gets rewarded.

In essence they've made mini governments. They decide the rules on what content is and is not allowed to succeed. There are downvote groups that downvote things they don't think are worthy, and upvote groups that push the things they like. I't fascinating and cool.

My brain explodes when I see people from Venezuela using Bitcoin, Mining, Steemit in order to get out from their country's system (hyperinflation, etc)
https://www.cnbc.com/2017/08/24/bitcoin-mining-is-popular-in-venezuela-because-of-hyperinflation.html

I believe that transparency and open source are the way to go,,,,, If you look at countries that are doing well one of the things they have in common is the low amount of corruption. And Thanks To You for your good post @acidyo

-> They finally found a way to use the decades old Public-Private key technology to do something meaningful.

I really don't know a lot about blockchain. So can you tell me something about it ? I am a new comer so it will be really helpful to me. Tnx in advance.

Emancipation from the government and true privacy and freedom. So many new possibilities that will revolutionize the world. Any networks run directly on the blockchain will allow us to actually own our accounts. Also getting away from centralized banking is awesome.

Myself a computer science student, I see my future in blockchain, because of its wide range of applications. Blockchain is going to rule the world. Different countries have already started adopting blockchain for different sectors so as to eradicate the corruption.

The best thing about blockchain is the transparency it provides. Everyone will have the access to every piece of information in a transaction, since the data is decentralised and stored in blocks. And manipulation of data is nearly impossible, since they will have to manipulate the whole blockchain to do it.

It is happy to that banks in my country has already started choosing blockchain. Hospitals are going to start using them. So as I said earlier, I see my career in blockchain.

And another thing that made my mind blown is the fact that the power consumption by the bitcoin miners is more than power consumed by 150 countries around the world.
http://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/data-story-energy-consumed-by-bitcoin-miners-around-the-world-is-more-than-over-150-countries-2446425.html

Wow I am mindblown by the fact the bank in your country started choosing blockchain technology. I don't think the bank would go hand in hand with transparency. That also means it's still not decentralized by the fact that the bank will still be a medium. I would like to read further on your claim that your bank has started choosing blockchain technology. Would you mind direct me to any source?

Thank you for another insight and the source. I'll read it shortly! :)

Blockchain saved my puppy's life. Thanks, blockchain!!

What's mindblowing regarding blockchain is that it opens up a whole new world of opportunities to tackle actual problems in our society. The only principle of Decentralization gather people, it's a community based technology where you can do your thing freely withoout wondering if your bank, or your boss, or anyone will allow this.

  • Wanna send money to the other side of the world ? You're free to do so in 10min ! My actual bank takes ONE WEEK + hefty fees to do the same job !
  • Wanna go full offgrid ? Sell your electricity through POWR !
  • Wanna help your artists, bloggers, influencers but you don't have the money to use Patreon on a monthly basis ? Steemit !

This gives me hopes for a world where money is international, where you can connect to anyone in the world to resolve problems fast and where money can go back to the main purpose, being an transactionnal asset.
That's mindblowing for me.

what i like the most about the blockchain technology in a nutshell is having the freedom to hold our crypto assets without having to rely on middlemen to handle it for us and also having the transparency of all the transactions and activities we did in the blockchain. its as close as we can get to a real version of a "free world" in my opinion on some aspects. nice post @acidyo! :)

To me, Blockchains mean causing disruption on a global scale that makes even me blush.

giphy-71.gif

It blows my mind how blockchain with his transparency is changing the world it offers many new jobs in many different fields and gives new courses in universities it makes so many things much easier. With all the different cryptocurrencies it has created a big competitor for the FIAT money system which is for me the main point now Countries can create there own cryptocurrency and don't need to dependent that much more on the banks that is very mind blowing for me.

Blockchain is one of the technologies to watch in the years to come. It could revolutionize many sectors of the economy, starting with banking and insurance.

The blockchain is the new buzzword in the world of technologies. All sectors are starting to focus on concrete use cases, but few actors can boast of having developed revolutionary solutions. For good reason: blockchain technology is still very complex to understand.

To be honest, the most amazing thing on blockchain for me is the "oh fuck I cannot delete this", both in good and bad.

Very simple in the end.

The blockchain has always meant one thing to me: Freedom. Freedom from oppression. Freedom from middlemen. Freedom from a world where more control equates to more power.

That's a great question. I recently cryptocurrency in the world. But, nevertheless, I have my own idea of what constitutes a blockade. I imagine it to be a matrix of running green ticks. Such as in the movie of the same name Matrix where LEO and tablets :)

Very well put my friend keep up the good work

i dont know much about the blockchain itself but i do know something about THE POWER of the blockchain, if you know how to handle it well it can be a great tool for BIG Projects.

i used the power of the blockain to be strong, and then i used it to be useful helping people who live in streets.

so, if a big comunnity stands together and use the blockchain it can be really powerful in every aspect you want to use it

i did a post about it

https://steemit.com/venezuela/@malos10/with-the-support-of-youarehope-i-was-able-to-give-food-to-people-in-the-street-with-need-in-venezuela

Hey, I like to blog in general, I began with youtube and it was fun to make videos, I see it as a hobby and I like to share all my photos, cause I am addicted to take photos since I am a teenager, I never saw it as a competition and to be the best or what ever I just do it for my heart and I am happy if some people are reading my post :) :)
