Eric García was back in the starting eleven in the victory that gave Barça a place in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey (0-5 against Valencia). The youth-team player was chosen by Hansi Flick in order to take on the inevitable rotations given the load of games the blaugrana are playing, and he did his duty with flying colours.
Mestalla is always a tough spot for any big team, and although Valencia is in a critical situation in the league as it is second to last, Barça had to stay focused as it was a crucial match to stay alive in one of the season's objectives, the Copa del Rey.
The defence's performance was brilliant. It started with a good performance by Wojciech Szczesny between the sticks and Eric García in the centre of the defence. Eric showed his ease in understanding with his partner on the pitch, whether it was Pau Cubarsí at the start or Íñigo Martínez in the second half to keep another clean sheet, which is already the fourth in nine games in 2025.
The offside tactic once again bore fruit by avoiding dangerous actions by the 'che' forwards. In fact, Eric García hit the nail on the head by taking a decisive step forward so that Umar Sadiq was caught offside in the play that ended in a goal disallowed for Valencia.
The Catalan centre-back has established himself as a reliable replacement for Flick, and following the latest injury to Íñigo Martínez, he has been in the line-up for the last two games against Valencia, in which Barça have achieved a 12-1 record in goals (7-1 and 0-5). He also played the entire second half against Alavés, in which they also kept a clean sheet (1-0) and with him on the pitch they only conceded one goal from Atalanta, as he was substituted before the second goal.
