Update on the Binance Phishing Attack. Who are the Thieves and how much money did they lose?

in #bitcoin7 years ago (edited)

Binance has a bounty of $250,000 to bring the March 7th Binance phishing attack thieves to justice. The attack ultimately failed for the thieves and a significant amount of the crook's cryptocurrency was frozen.

See my preivious article that I wrote explaining the phishing heist:

One of the Binance phishing victoms released information on the API key creation IP address.

  • The IP address (213.87.134.39) resolves to Lipetsk, Russia.

It is possible that the thieves used VPN to mask their real IP address. If they didn't, then Binance is real close to bringing the crooks to justice.

The crooks involved in the Binance Phishing attack are targeting multiple exchanges. Here is a list of know phishing domains.
http://telegra.ph/Binance-Hacker-Bounty-Known-Domains-03-16

The crooks have hidden their tracks well as they were using "Bullet Proof" European webhost, resolving to IP addresses of 80.92.65.215 and (primarily) 85.93.20.58.

It is interesting that the crooks used the following names to register the domains. It is not sure if these names are real.

* Sergey Valerievich Kireev

* Viktoria Belinskaia

How much money did the crooks lose in their attempted phishing heist?

The VIA coin that was deposited in the 31 Binance accounts was purchased at Bittrex.
The crooks prefilled 31 binance accounts with very close to 4000 VIA coin each. The VIA coin was transferred from Bittrex to Binance within 2 hours of the attack. Binance cyber-security system detected irregular activity and froze these accounts. If we presume that VIA coin was purchased just before the transfer, we can get an estimation on how much the crooks paid and ultimately lost. I went back to Bittrex to find out how much VIA was trading for at the time of the transfers. VIA was trading for about the equivalent of $2.8748 in US dollars on Bittrex.

The total amount of losses for the thieves was approximately:

$356,475.

Binance has reversed all irregular trades, and Binance’s CEO announced that the exchange will be donating these coins to charity.

Well that's not too bad, charity needs the money more than investors do. Like they said didn't invest what you aren't willing to lose. These hackers must be something else being this advanced going for a huge exchange.

It is nice for whatever charity that Binance picks. It is however - a PR stunt from Binance. It sends a message to crooks and strengthens confidence of users. Binance will win big (from the publicity) if the crooks are found.

That was very strong. I am very new in this of the crypto currencies, the problem of control of change in Venezuela does not allow me to invest, but I am strongly stuck in that. I have friends who did have a good scare in those days. of the attack on Binance

If you are having problems with government regulation, the work-around is VPN. It allows you to connect virtually from another location (outside the country). Here in the US, we don't have that issue, but I am aware of the need in other places.

Well besides that in terms of the connection that almost have us blocked. I was referring to exchange control but monetary, Venezuela's currency is the Bolivares. and the government does not allow mortals like us to have American dollars. the only ones who have access to the dollars are the government delinquents.
That is why it is difficult for me to invest in another currency. but little by little with steemit I will succeed.

i doubt Russians would extradite their fellow comrades to others for any criminal matters...
who knows... they might've orchestrated the whole hack.

True, the Russians most likely won't extradite. However, Russia wants to be a cryptocurrency friendly country. I would expect that if the thieves are found in Russia, then Russia would make an example of how hard the criminal penalties are.

Present day bitcoin is the very powerful coin in the world......
