I think you are correct in believing that Steemit has lost some of its momentum, but that perception my be highly influenced by the stagnant price rather than the many innovations taking place within Steemit right now.
If anyone ask what Steemit and the Steem token are about, I simply tell them the it is a social media site with its own type of Bitcoin (crypto-currency for those than are more advanced), and they pay you with the internal bitcoin type crypto-currency called Steem. I don't really get into the entire blockchain thing until the are further along.
I am hoping that Steemit will figure out how to increase the user base and/or monetize the steemit.com website, thereby bringing more value to the steem token. And yes, many will have to start small and work their way in to more payouts. It does take time.
