Ok, yeah it's not happening. We are so far from Mainstream we would need a space shuttle with light travel to get there. It is interesting though and can possibly result in a lot more buzz and positive growth. I doubt the effect will be immediate though.

I've been trying to introduce my friends and fellow authors/writers/poets to steemit. One said that she was concerned about how 'safe' it was, said she heard about a 'hacking' (or words to that effect).
I think it's still a little new (well, Steemit is in beta stage still) so people are cautious of new.
One day they'll realise what they're missing!

Yeah, we do have a ways to go before mainstream - a lot of stuff needs to happen first.
Main thing I hear as an objection is that people can't readily buy things with their crypto (I think BTC transactions are still too slow and expensive for BTC to be the solution right now). This is a fixable problem.
Heck, they are all fixable problems :)
But we are earlier than early adopters - still!
It's probably a good thing, no matter what-- the more cryptos become a "household concept," the better.
I'm just hopeful that 2018 will not only be a mainstreaming year, but also a year in which alt coins develop an identity of their own, separate from BTC. What I mean is, it's time we move on from everything being described as "like bitcoin." And time to move on from the paradigm that if BTC is going up, the market goes up, and vice versa.
@denmarkguy I totally agree. I wish alt coins would stop being tethered to other cryptos and start being bought with usd or other "real" currencies. Bitcoin honestly is shit as far as currency goes. It would be worth a lot less if everything wasn't tethered to it IMO.

I was talking to some friends from my old job the other day about Steemit and the steps it takes to convert to bitcoin and then cash when you want to take some earnings. "That sounds like so much work!" they said.
I wanted to say, "It's a hell of a lot less work than punching in to that miserable job every day."
