Why HODLing Bitcoin and other Crypto’s is not enough to achieve Freedom

in #bitcoin7 years ago

Don’t misunderstand me here… I’m not saying you should get rid of your positions in crypto, but that for everyone to be free from national fiat, you actually need to stop using it in favor of nationless, borderless, censorship resistant cryptocurrencies if the vision of Satoshi Nakamoto is to become a reality. Bitcoin was born at a time when banks had achieved one of the greatest heists in all of human history during the 2008 financial crisis. Since then there have been currency wars and bitcoin has tried to play a neutral role. But it will not be allowed to stay neutral for long.

This is because the banking system and governments around the world are now alerted to the developments of blockchain technology but are busy building “permissioned ledgers”. In other words, they don’t want you using currency that they don’t control because then they will no longer have any power over you. It’s the third stage in the five stages of grief (as Andreas Antonopoulos puts it) where they say, “we like blockchain, just without the decentralized, borderless, censorship resistant properties, but controlled by us part of it”.

So now we’re in a race between centrally controlled digital currencies and decentralized digital currencies. If the former wins the race, we will be in for a digital panopticon, probably for at least a generation. If the latter wins, it will give value to decentralization and make national fiat worthless, which of course means that governments around the world will no longer have the money to create the wars and act like parasites.

The source of your power is not the vote, but your money. When you’re able to control your own money and have others use it, you gain power. What fractional reserve banking does is create an allowance for what you’re able to do. As children we received allowances from our parents, then when you grow up, you work for an allowance from the state which is called “social security”. This gives them the ability to tax you and use your resources as their own. You essentially become a battery that powers their system.

If you want to power your own future, you have to stop buying into their system of control. This means using decentralized crypto’s like bitcoin, litecoin, steem, etc, not just as a store of value, but as a medium of exchange as well. For this to happen, at least one of these cryptos has to become the “unit of account”. Right now, that’s the USD. We know that a switch has happened when we no longer ask how much a bitcoin is worth, but ask how many bitcoin is it.

Government authorities and banks are of course not going to fade softly into the darkness, but will fight to remain relevant. One of the tools that they will use is the chaos of the situation to convince you that you cannot govern yourselves. The reality is that you will either learn to govern yourselves or you will cause planet wide extinction. There’s no in between except for the accidental grace that befalls us until the wrong button is accidentally pushed.

Bitcoin isn’t just about financial freedom, but is about elimination of the hazard of human control (aka terrorism), by returning mathematical control back to nature.

For me one of the best things is get all people together, is all about community, this is only possible if we all use it, thats the core of blockchain. I think is a crazy idea we actually replace fiat, that is kinda a dream, im not saying is not possible but very difficult for sure.
Really interesting article, i love Andreas Antonopoulos, really inspiring man
Thanks for sharing

This is why I keep pushing so hard for a female centric Steem app...not just because I think we need more women to be "balanced". I mean sure representation is cool and all, but it's so much more than just satisfying some SJW problem. Women work in the US, most women now, and where before men would control the purse strings by lauding over them that they bring home the bacon, this isn't the case anymore. And because women work, and still have to do most everything at home (ahem like in our house sometimes ahem) I believe that's why the self-care industry has exploded. Women feel they deserve pampering and rightfully so, with most taking on three full time jobs (a full time job, the house/kids and many an additional part time job). Where we get the majority of the population's money stream is through these women. That's how to redirect the flow of money, and the fastest way to do that is find the easiest means of getting women to not only understanding crypto, but using it and realizing how much more efficient it is to make a wage online than to juggle their multiple jobs (ya know, other than the house/kids one. Crypto can't fix everything :p) In all seriousness though, once we get women using an app, and all of these companies can see how many eyeballs/dolla dolla bills are available on said app, they may consider changing their tune about whether they are willing to accept crypto. Once a few heavy hitters do, they will all shortly follow, and once that happens, fiat is going to have a hard battle ahead. Maybe this is too simplistic, but I really think that's where the core of the change is going to happen!

and still have to do most everything at home (ahem like in our house sometimes ahem)...

We're about an hour north of Syracuse. We heat the place with a wood stove and spend hours chopping and stacking wood, cleaning the wood stove every 2 weeks, no dishwasher, etc... This place is high maintenance.

Haha, well I can't say that I am stoking a flame every day, but the maintenance on a large house with a huge backyard and three kids is exhausting, when you are working full time! It would be nice if things were a little more even around here, but things improve a little bit at a time! Patience, I tell myself, patience.

The Dollar is so influential globally because of petrol and not because of US hegemony or consumer choice. This was the case for quite some time but the Petro-Dollar is not what it used to be anymore. There are quite a few competing players on the field now and how long petrol holds on to is a question of a few forseable years.Yes, we can all choose to spend in Crypto but if it is still being converted to fiat at the back -end then nothing will change in regards to crypto given value though fiat.

Crypto should find it's own petrol so to speak. A commodity or service that everybody needs which is priced primarily by crypto. Or wait for the Petro-Dollar to collapse and someone with big enough balls to introducea new commodity-Currency pairing to the world

Overstock.com takes bitcoin. That doesn't do much for me as most of the stuff on there is just...stuff. I'm more interested in services. I suspect that this could start at the local level (craigslist now has a "cryptocurrency ok" box for sales and services).

For that to happen, a lot has to change around us.

people pay mortgages, rent, bills, groceries, etc.

Almost all of that today happens in fiat.

For me, all of it.

I can use a service like livingroomofsatoshi to pay directly from crypto things like bills, credit cards, etc, but that is just a middle man that converts into fiat.

A big problem in making crypto's 'exchange currencies' is the big ups and downs. Fiat money is still the standard and there will be a transition period for a while. Many platforms don't start with crypto support as a means of payment until the crypto/fiat exchange course isn't more stable.

And the HODL mentality is also a result of the extreme ups and downs. If you expect that US Dollar will have 10x the value they have now by the end of the year, you will HODL them.

good information. I like your articles @zoidsoft

Big fan of Andreas Antonopoulos. Have you read his book yet?

this is very important and this is how we exchange currency from Indonesia or from various countries so that this post I have resteem to be read by people from our country
