I’d think the larger monitor was better for you than a smaller one, Kevin 🧐 I notice I get headachey with iPhone (eyephone) & am vowing to spend more desktop time w/large monitor 👀

But, of course, distance from screen matters, time you spend, posture, lighting, etc... Heck, maybe, it is the wall color that’s gnawing at your soul 🤣

Apparently, Oscar Wilde’s last words as he lay bedridden were:

"This wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One of us has got to go."

I think the green wall and computer fan ain't working out.. lol

Give 'em up, man, before they do you in! :p On a slightly more serious note, scheduling an appointment with an eye doctor myself, due to a headache on the left side of my face that won't let up, for weeks... Damned computers, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em :o

Wishing you well-being, Kevin, all ways _/|_

I used to be okay being on the monitor 24/7, but naturally I guess it gets worse with age. It ain't like it used to be anymore. Cheers man :)

I miss reading, book reading, 24/7, like a person possessed—until I became one with the book... But, at 44 years old, I don’t have that laser focus or the time.

Oh well, we lose some powers and gain others. Sweet dreams, my friend 😴 💤

Why the downvote, @mukhtarilyas ?

don't mind, it's not like we ever ask "why the upvote"

Good point 👌🏼 I will adopt this elevated attitude from now on. Sweet dreams 🌙

I was going bigger until arriving at 32". I started feeling at home. the only upgrade would now be a ultra wide but unless it doesn't have the height of a 16:9 screen, a normal 32" is where i feel best at. I might get 2 more of those though :D

ultra wide looked weird to me, but apparently it has benefits for reducing eye strain as mentioned in one of the comments above!

Have you tried using f.lux? It's a total lifesaver when working long nights, or when your eyes just need some rest after staring at a screen too long.

Also, if you're in the market for a monitor, I highly recommend an ultrawide display, it really helps with productivity!

Flux is cool but annoying as hell for gamers and a pain in the ass sometimes.

Perhaps the stuff about low light indoors harming eyesight is only part of a correlation for why people have bad vision, there was a scientific paper that discovered that exposure to sunlight made the eyes stop growing outwards.

So get some sunlight so your eyes stop trying to find the sun like a pair of weird potatoes sprouting out of your face.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/19/well/live/for-better-vision-let-the-sunshine-in.html

Too lazy right now to find another article I read on the subject.

Don't get too much direct sunlight in your eyes and get UV damaged.

And get some sleep, your sleep cycle is probably shit right now if you've been trying to sleep in a room full of electronics and you're up late with anxious thoughts and paranoid fantasies.

I can well understand that. I don't want to miss my "LG 34-UC88" curved monitor anymore. Here some "gearporn" from my studio.

ajp-gearporn.jpg

Better a large monitor than 2 small monitors, where you always look at the edges when you place them in a central position. With this you have a very comfortable working environment. No excessive eye strain. And always put everything on night view. My Cubase is also set to dark.

Ah shame, didn't know there are such benefits using this type of monitor! Got myself a standard one instead..

I had to get used to the Curved Panel first. But it's really nice to work with it. The monitor is especially long and not so high. It's not like that on the neck. When I surf the net, I do not open the browser window as a full screen. I use only half of it and then position the window in the middle. It's like I have a small screen. But with the music software you need and you have a great overview.

P. S. Thank you very much for your generous upvote!

@kevinwong are you kidding me???? So what are you going to do with this one? The feeling can never be the same if you get a smaller display screen. If it's really affecting your eyes like you say, why not get Dark shades for it or put a screen protector to reduce the amount of light getting into your eyes from the screen .

I am really interested in knowing what you wana do with this display screen if you get another one .

I'll probably hand it over to an orphanage nearby.. once I manage to find the remote control

Hahahahahhahahaha you don't even know where the control is...you funny man. Well giving it to The orphanage is a very good idea. Where I stay we are fund of selling off things we don't want anymore atva lower price but i think your idea is better and serves for a common good.

I see. I usually just give things away because it's a hassle selling around here..

Hey Kevin,

Often it's not the screen or the brightness or the radiation, it's finding frequency of rest.

Try this Eye Leo.
http://eyeleo.com/

Cheers,
dj

Thanks, nice tip!

no worries, yeah, eye strains are real and the accumulated impact unnoticable, apparently a small thing like looking away after every few minutes or longer makes a world of difference

I wish the site is https lol. A bit of a security freak here. Btw, I found f.lux which seems cool. But you were talking about "frequency of rest"..

No need for ssl, it's a known freeware, been around for a while

freq of rest is different for everyone, my rest includes closing my eyes and then looking at a faraway object preferably something naturally green like trees or something

for me it's minimum 1-2mins rest when the eyes don't feel tired (periodic interval set by the app and yourself - do experiment), when the eyes begin to feel tired, gotta take longer rest or best just take a break - get up, walk away, wash face, go drink water, etc

Thanks @dj123, this is why i'm going to change my workstation. Currently it's all sound-proofed and without windows because I was focusing on music back then. Don't need it now..

yeah, do give yourself a window, also sunlight at least 15 mins a day direct gets you your minimum vitamin D and reduces depression and other negative emotional state. gotta take care of yourself @kevinwong.

I guess it's the same as all of the bad habits we develop over time without even knowing what we're really doing to ourselves.

You are a perfect example of people’s everyday problems they can’t figure out what is causing them. It’s like in my profession. I work with electricity, and what happened to you is happening to me on a daily bases. At first I was really frustrated when I couldn’t find the cause of this particular problem, however I had always solved it. I look for every litle detail and eventually I always solve it, no matter what. The most important thing is to never give up and never panic, event if you have to look 100 time I guarantee you, eventually you will find it. Usually it is it, just like you mentioned “must be something blindingly obvious”

@kevinwong, it's good you discovered this on time. Some screen display are just so hazardous to health expecially to the eyes.
It's good to know you'll be dumping it for a better and more eye friendly display.

I myself have a terrible habit and I always pray I don't end up blind as I'm growing up.
My bad habit - I stare at my phone from morning till night. Please don't blame me. In an ever changing world, we want to catch the latest fad, know what's trending, know the latest headline, read the latest discovery in science and tech, health etc. we want to know how the crypto market is faring, what's dumping and what's pumping, trying to post on steemit and go through what others are posting, and a whole lot of other things. Oh! I forgot to add, watch videos too.

I know how terrible this is to my brain and eyes, but I can't help it - I wanna be successful, I gotta pack all the knowledge and I gotta put my legs in the right places - yeah, know where to invests for my future.

Oh my poor eyes, I'm so sorry. But daddy just gotta keep trying hard to become successful, so please bear with him.

Happy Steeming

Thanks @enolife. All the best in your endeavours! I'd personally cut down on news and getting to know what's up all the time in all places, but why not if you can deal with it ;) maybe I'm getting older! lol

OK. Good to know that. Whatever is best for you is fine

That's a cool rig with your music gear and speakers. It's great to have everything handy. I just have a couple of wide-screens, but I've seen others have a huge screen. @voxxov has one for his studio PC. I can see the benefits if you need to stand away from it, eg to play guitar or drums

Oh that's an old picture. The music gears are at the side now and mostly unused! Yeah, big screen was good before since I was doing some of those in the room, but now I'm not doing that anymore. Really a nice hobby I wish to revive at some point :)

lol, how can you?
I sometimes find my 17" laptop screen to be tooo big!
I will be looking forward to see if you find yourself a satisfying smaller screen :)
Happy Shopping!

Just didn't occur to me. Probably just scoffed off at some advice my mum gave me when i first took the TV (yes it's a TV, not pc monitor lol). 27" now. Didn't know a downsize can be better :P

Well said. Lately I have been at the computer for long periods of time and it is making my eyes strained. A bigger problem was my posture. I couldn't believe how fucked up it was at my age. I have been going to the gym to specifically strengthen weak muscles due to sitting so often. It has been a miracle. I look and feel soooo much better now. No more forward head posture!

My display isn't as big as yours, but it is a Samsung laptop. I think being near a radiating display isn't good for you regardless of the size. Get outside and let your eyes take in some sun rays!

I'll likely reduce my desktop time to only a couple of hours a day now even if I'm at home! Maybe a projector to the wall is a better solution?

If you can actually follow through with it, then that would be great. The thing with me is that whenever I try to minimize my computer usage, I always end up needing to do something with a computer regardless. I'll say, "ok no more steemit and youtube. Let's do something new today" and then whatever new activity I can do also involves a computer. I always lose....=(

Best would be augmented reality displays..

Hey there

Stick 'blue block amber glasses' into amazon if it's your sleep/mood combo not being right.

These really helped for me when I'd sit 8 hours in front of 2 similar sized monitors.

Now I have a laptop and don't work for the big monitor guys so things are better, good luck!

Nice tip, looking into it!

A pleasure.

I'm thinking you aren't the only Steemian who could possibly do with a pair.

Also, night mode I think has been a great addition in this regard, but those are some statistics I can't pull from the Blockchain.

Good luck!

Huh what statistics from night mode do you mean? kinda confused :D

How night mode has improved the rest-time of Steemians - would be a nice case study for sure!

Did you order a pair of glasses? They are a bit Bono from U2, but who's worried about looking like a loaded rockstar? 😁

Damn. 40" is big. I have a 24".
Now I'm thinking better to get another of about the same than change to a bigger one.

24" is just nice! I got a 27" and still feel it's a bit big!

oh... i was thinking if i add, it'll be 27. gotta to rethink.

Well done .. interesting

radiation from the glow of the desktop is very disturbing the eye.
are you sure replace with a smaller inch screen?
maybe you should slanted eyes to see the small screen.

got a 27 now. Much better!

Good choice bro.
very important to protect eyes health.

It's unfortunate you had to endure this for a long time. Well good you've discovered it. It's never too late to adjust. At the moment you have no choice but dump that long time buddy you had spent long glorious moments with. A 40-inch Samsung is a great have for every one.. me too at the moment. But health comes before anything. Just let me know where you'll dump it.

I'll be sending it over a nearby for donation! It's a very heavy first generation lcd TV..

It's better to take shorter breaks more often at your workstation than longer breaks and less often; for example a 5-10 minute break after 50-60-minute continuous screen and/or keyboard use is likely to be better than a 15-minute break every two hours.

Yeah I always take my breaks, quite frequently. Maybe now with a better screen I can stay longer lol

Some of those screens could be real deadly. There was one i looked at for so long and ended up wishing my eyes were plucked out. They hurt so bad i almost cried.
So yes take the root of all evil away.

Haha it's the operational blindness which didn't let you see the true circumstances.
We have this often in life. We are dealing with things everyday so that we don't notice the negative points on at. If anybody sees this, they directly notice it and ask you if you're crazy.

I used to play a lot of the game boy color back in my childhood. It's the one without any lights.
I think this got me really bad eyes today. Of course a thing one should not underestimate.

Hmm. Probably backlight is better than none. I guess it depends.. I'm certainly getting irritated by backlights these days..

Lol root of all evil indeed. I remember someone telling me too that I shldnt make my phone a god in my life. That I was always on my phone. Haha

Ah, the phone. Sometimes I feel like I'm a prisoner within its 5" walls when I use it for too long..

Seriously I know that feeling

Nice setup! Where are the tunes? I need the tuuuuuuuunes! I think Im gonna add the Push with my APC as well. But anywayz, give me tuuuuuunes! I'm going to remix Steem!

IMG_0465.JPG

I use a TV too as you can see. This post made me do more research, and it is the blue light that affects us. I think Im going to trash mine too.

Someone made a literal blockchain track before, as in, process the signals/content of the chain and put it in an audio wave lol. Sweet setup :) I'm not active in music atm (that's just an old picture a few years ago. It's just a normal empty table now lol)

@kevinwong, I think 27 inch dual monitor setup should be better for your eyesight 😊. Thundermatch IT store should have some on sales

I went to Harvey Norman instead. It's kinda overpriced there! But was too lazy to drive far nor wait for a delivery!

Ah okok 😂 Harvey Norman good choice too 👍🏻

hey man! was great to meet you last night and hear from your thoughts. ahh. screen time. definitely need a healthy balance. but it can be quite unavoidable if we want to keep up with times. until the next great invention ;)

A harmless retinal display might do wonders!

I fully support your idea. Huge displays are roots of all evil!
And I can help you to get rid of your old one. Just send me it, I'll cleanse it with holy water.

Lol. It's actually quite an old TV. Probably first generation lcd!

It is easy to be drawn in. Our world is becoming screens. I recall looking at a pic of Times Square in NYC...nothing but screens.

It is good to get away. I use a laptop. I use to connect it to my tv which is 48 inches. Man that was overwhelming.

One has to wonder the effect all this technology has on our bodies.

Putting a detox mask on my face now!

Thank you for dropping by and supporting my post just now. Appreciate it :)

Np @zord189 - you're a great blogger :)

WAAAAA, better than throwing oranges on Chap goh mei

Haha, the downsides of technology.

As much as I’ve wanted to invest more time in writing and producing music lately, body has also been wanting time away from technology - quite the predicament.

Best manage time for a healthy balance, perhaps. Unless can find some sort of alternative vibrational technologies or something that o counter-balance, shield, nullify EMFs, etc...

Yeah one of the most valuable things in the future should be "time away from tech", as predicted by some futurists. Time to make bank off that!

hope you got a good chair at least bro?! haha.

Yeah it's okay. Thanks for the reminder, I probably could do with a better one..

I don't know how you did it man. If I go over to a friends house that has a monitor like that and try to do anything other than watch a movie from very far away I lose it. I've literally thrown up from trying to have a conversation on something that big.

There may have been other things involved with that last part

Haha now that you've mentioned it, I do remember almost throwing up the first few days I had this set up a few years ago! What do you mean by "last part" ?

I was referring to my own vomiting. I.e. I may have been trying to operate said large screen hungover when it caused me to throw up. I still think I would have yakked regardless, though. :)

Ah, the giant Samsung monitor may have given more exposure to blue light which can damage eye sight. Hmmmm..... though maybe you have super powers from being radiated by it :)))

I'm feeling like an irradiated mutant at the moment.

Shhhhyeah. Considering the things that pop up in my mind, I know I have read too much Marvel already.

i'm fine with a pistachio green wall behind my desk and my 17" Notebook monitor on a stand and a second 21" display on the right side. That's all on my desk.. ok cup of coffee and a mouse. I like a clean workspace.. everything unnecessary drains my energy. I use big closed headphones for audio.

You use impressive tech stuff on your desk but for me it would be overwhelming. You used every square inch.. Maybe you could use a bigger table better space out or put some stuff off the table if you not use them.. it can free your mind. Just an idea..

Haha yeah the table is pretty clear now. It's an old picture when I was still active in music! Hope to be getting back into it someday, but production really frustrates me since it's always too hard to produce the exact sound I've in mind!

Nice! Many years ago about 1998 we founded a group called "The Oaks" and made a mixture of electronic and guitar music also with some vocal.. just for fun.. i know what you mean by produce the exact sound. In these days i dreamed to get the skills to do exactly that, because i had great ideas in mind and couldn't transform them into music.. But we had some personal successes.. with crazy jam sessions in the night where magic happened and everybody just smiled 😊

Honestly sometimes i miss the times of pure creativity without any boundaries.. but constantly try recreating happy childhood!

Yeah it's seriously tough to make good music sometimes that I even wanna bang my head on the wall. DJing on the other hand, is much better for me :)

lol. You really don't need glasses? Then I need to know what you are using ;)

Its a relief you finally found the problem. It could have led to something worse. You should also consider getting some spectacles also to help protect your eyes.

are you on dsound or anything? @kevinwong

I bought the software Iris and all is fine now with my big monitor!

I might have an easy solution. Mark Cuban invested in a company called Gunnar Optiks on Shark Tank. Its a profitable company that creates glasses that converts blue light to yellow light, which is supposed to be much healthier for your eyes while working on a computer. There's bunch of styles and frames as well. Best Buy and GameStop are listed as retailers.

Woow very good 👍👍👍

Like I was reading and I ended up laughing so hard...

Please when you get a smaller one, I'll love to have dis one

Hi @ kevin ...
I am very familiar with what you are talking about because I am also experiencing it. I tried not to touch my laptop but the temptation of my eyes was unbearable. Then I touched it again and that means I will forget the time, on the matter I only sleep 10 hours a week .... but finally I found a very strategic way, I told my wife, "if you see me touch the laptop, please touch me to make love. " hahahaha.... and it's work very well. I recommend you to try it. lol.

haha!nice post and yeah these are the roots o fevil thanks fro sharing such an important topiuc based post its ,my first time being in your post and you got a new follower!

Oooo so sorry @kevinwong i didnt know that the stuff affect peoples eyesight ..

Thank you for telling us early at least we wont learn the hard way ...

Hope ya eyes get better. However, go see a physician ..sorry about that

Lovely studio you got there though

Am happ for you that you have found it, lucky you. You have a very nice studio i really love it. What kind of sound system do you run on

I'm using my laptop in order to keep things close to my eye-view and reducing eye movement.
the big screen is for movies and so on :)

One of my friends had the exact same problem that created irritation in his eyes. The doctors asked him to stop using computer. I'm glad you figured it out. Good luck @kevinwong!

Thanks for sharing this @kevinwong, glad that you got it sorted! My girlfriend had a similar problem for a long time and eventually fixed it with some sort of screen protector, I can get the name of it if you want?

Maybe mount the 40incher on the wall above your line of immediate sight! I've done a similar thing with my setup. Main display is a 22 inch for me! :)
