A Steemit Observation On Followers

DO NOT WASTE AN UPVOTE ON THIS ARTICLE. Your thoughts are more appreciated for the purpose of this posting.

I have only been on Steemit for about a month and a half now, but I have noticed a few things. I have wriiten my share of flops that when I look back on them I have to admit I would not upvote if given that opportunity myself. However I have been fortunate to have written some successful pieces of work.

What I have noticed is that no matter whether I post a flop or a good article that receives a lot of votes, only about 6 of my followers will ever send me an upvote.

Now I completely understand the diminishing return thing on upvoting. I myself try to look through my feed everyday and pick what I like best from my followers and then begin upvoting until I notice that my upvotes begin to lose their mojo. So I figure that if everyone is doing that, I must have a bunch of followers that are never interested in anything I do. I wonder then why they are following me at all. I also wonder that when articles I write that are popular get upvoted by lots of people that do not follow me at all (sometimes as much as 98% of the total vote) what good are my followers? Am I missing something here? I would humbly appreciate any insight you may offer. Thanks in advance.

@olmech

Sort:

They are mostly confused followers that followed you in hope that you will follow back. Once that aim is achieved they are done, not interested in reading any article. I have a lot of them too.

Yeah...thats what I figure too. Thanks for your reply.

I personally think the quality of steemit will go up if everyone understands how to leverage their voting power percentage. I'm guilty of it too I haven't got much left myself. It takes a while to recharge, I heard a recommended 20 likes a day but that could be out dated. I need to lay off the likes, but I'll chuck one your way, I don't even thing its worth anything hahah.

All the best mate

and your voting power is at 23%, so I'd stay off the voting for about 5-6 days if I were you.

You can chekc your voting power here https://steemd.com/@harrynewman

Aww what the fuark I can't like anything for that long! Seeya later guys *waves haha

What? so @olmech gets a like but I help you find your voting power and I get nothing!! I'm entitled to 23% of an upvote from you. haha! :P

don't worry, it will be back up there before you know it, doesn't stop you from enjoying content on steem, just feels bad that you cant really show your gratitude as easily as we did before the hard-fork.

Does commenting have a limit? I can always show some love there haha. Thanks for filling me in though I could have been in the dark on that for ages.

you can comment all you want, and follow as many people you want, just voting needs to be managed properly to have the full influence you want on the community. I like to see my votes make an actual change to the financial contribution of a post, sucks when I vote and the number remains zero, also it save from commenting if you agree with somebody elses post or comment.

True. Thanks again for that!

I also heard that the magic number for upvotes is about 20, but mileage may vary. Thanks for your reply.

No worries man! I swear I get so like happy, I have to chill out.

the magic number is 11 now. 11 post per day if you are at full power, in 24 hours it will be back up to 100%

Ahhh Thanks for clearing that up!

Yes satoshimoto, very helpful knowledge there. Thank you!

Majority of your followers are going to be opportunists who follow anyone they can and expect you to follow them back in return, their home page is so filled with entries your post will get lost in the middle of all of it, becuase the home page isn't catagorized they cant even find any good content based on their interests so they dont even use the home page when they looking for content to read.

Then the other thing is timing, I'm on steem more than any other news or social media site, in fact I can say that 90% of the content I read comes off steem these days just becuase there is sooo much good content in here. but I also have a social life, a wife and a job to keep, so if I were following you and you were to upload something while I'm not connected I'm unlikely to look back accross previous posts to find your article depending on how many people I'm following obvioulsy.

Those 6 people you speak of come out of the group of the few true followers you have and they happen to be on steem when you uploaded your post, they might be a different 6 each time or the same 6, who knows but I'm personally happy if my blogs have an effect on even 1 persons life.

Just keep blogging dude, and dont try to produce content for upvotes or money, produce genuine informative articles and you'll artract more true followers and they'll upvote your stuff, steem isn't a job, not everyone on here is earning hundreds of dollars per post and probably never will, the focus here is to share your experience and ideas so others can learn from them.

Good luck :)

Thanks for your thoughts. It was very helpful. Good luck to you as well.

Many people only follow to get followed back, so that you might upvote them some time.
I like your post a lot because this is the truth of the matter.

Yeah I try to steer clear of the "follow me, follow you" bunch anymore. Thanks for your thoughts.

Here ya go mate :) Don't worry about selfish people. Lots of individuals are just stuck in their parasite mindset. They will abandon this place sooner or later. Recent HF 19 made voting power drain faster, so sometimes people just cant vote for everything they like. Don't be discouraged, and know that everyone faces same problems. Solution for me is to write less frequently, but when i do, i devote few-several hours to it. That way, people will always view your articles when you post them, and since you put so much effort, probably reward it.

Yes, I know that when I dole out my upvotes I routinely have more I would like to vote for than I have votes for. I suspect that you are correct. Before HF19, people cast votes more often. It is taking me time to get used to I suppose. Thanks for your remarks.
