There are plans to cut the waiting period. Changes are coming fairly soon to address this, but I don't understand all the technical details. It's possible to buy accounts for cryptocurrency right now if you want to get someone on board. One reason Steemit have been restricting new accounts is that they have to fund their delegation and that won't scale. I hope that once the new changes are in place we will see a proper marketing campaign to bring people here.

Okay, that makes a bit of sense to me ( the restriction because of delegation). Once they figure that out, I don't think they'll need to really do anything as far as marketing. People on instagram were flocking to vemo (venmo? Vivo? ...whatever) and that app doesn't even work half the time ( or ever). content makers are hungry and searching for a new home.
I remember the three days I saw nothing but mentions of that other site everywhere... then... nothing! A good case in point of not wanting to put the marketing and user influx before the product is in better shape.
