When you hear the word Reiki, what do you think of?
Energy, healing, Japan, spirituality??
Or maybe you’ve never even heard of it?
Well, let’s get down to the basics. Reiki was “re-founded” by Dr. Mikao Usui in 1865 in Japan. I use the word “re-found” because he doesn’t lay claim to being the one who actually invented anything (because Reiki energy isn’t created by us).
The story goes that Usui was a learned man, who was seeking a way to reduce suffering of himself and those around him by finding a way to heal using his hands that didn’t deplete his energy.
During a 21 day isolated meditation to seek enlightenment, on the 21st day Usui discovered the power of Reiki.
After this Usui created the Usui System of Reiki, which was then passed down from one Reiki Master to the next. Essentially Reiki broke off into two branches, one following the more traditional Japanese methods and one following more Western, Americanised methods.
Reiki can be roughly translated as:
Rei = Universal
Ki = life energy
This means that people practicing Reiki, channel the Reiki energy through their bodies – out of their hands and through the bodies of whoever they are treating.
The energy is a positive, white light which aids the body in healing and repairing blockages and other physical, emotional and mental imbalances.
Pretty cool, isn’t it?
A couple of weeks ago now, I recently completed my Reiki I course (in the traditional Usui System Reiki lineage). I had been drawn to doing some sort of energy healing or physical discipline that I could work with no matter where I travelled to, and no matter my age.
Now some of you may not “believe” in this whole world of energy and non-physical matter. However, the more we are moving forward the more Western science is slowly catching up with Eastern philosophies of energy. Scientists are now beginning to record, measure and finally see the effects that this energy field has on humans.
If you haven’t had a Reiki treatment I’d highly recommend one, but definitely be wary of the person you go to as everyone’s energy is different. Everyone has their own methods, some treatments the Reiki practitioners make physical contact with the person receiving the treatment, and others hover above the body, but essentially the gist of it is the same.
If you’ve been thinking about completing a Reiki course yourself, definitely do it! More than anything it can be used as a way to meditate and bring your body, mind, emotions and spirit into balance by sensing and directing positive energy to wherever you need it.
People often disregard the importance of self-healing but it can be one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself.
Best wishes on your energy healing journey :)

I got a reiki certificate a few years back but I never really stuck to doing treatments on myself or others. I've just picked it up again and the difference in myself is remarkable. It's a wonderful healing system. Great post!
Excellent to hear :) It's all about sticking to it. Reiki is definitely beneficial for everyday living.
Thank you for sharing your light with the world (◕‿◕✿) Many Blessings
I've only had one treatment (which I remember enjoying)...but I think it's time to head back. Thanks for the motivation.
You are welcome :) it's a nice refresher if you are feeling unbalanced.
A long time ago i tried to learn Reiki from a DVD i purchased, and it was like doing some slow movements and i didn't continue, maybe because i felt that it's not the same than doing it from a live course. Unfortunately there is no Reiki courses here where i live so i think i got to go back to watch that video again. Nice post, thanks.
You may be thinking of Tai chi? Tai chi uses slow movements and works with universal energy. It's best to do a Reiki course as it attunes you to the Reiki energy :)
ouhh yes thanks for the correction, actually i just ran to search the dvd which is somewhere into a pile of old boxes in my room to confirm if it's Tai chi or Reiki... but i cant find it... =( but now you've pointed out, i know you're right, it was Tai chi because the person in the video was performing a very slow like-karate movements. Sorry for the mistake.
