Rewards From Delegating to Boomerang Have Cratered

in #boomerang7 years ago (edited)

I have delegated to @boomerang for quite some time with very nice profits - with almost 4,400 SP delegated I was pulling in almost 10 SBD a day. It's crashed to maybe half that recently. It might be because they were targeted by @grumpycat, who is demanding that all vote bots limit their buying window to 3.5 days, ostensibly to prevent abuse (or maybe @grumpycat is just trolling us all for fun). Posts that used @boomerang were being downvoted big time by the cat, and this would explain why people stopped using @boomerang so much.

@boomerang submitted under duress. It's almost impossible to fathom how big an impact one rich dude (or duddete) like @grumpycat can have on the entire platform. He's throwing his million dollar weight of SP around and no one is interested in downvoting him back.

So now @boomerang has a 2.5 day buy window - why 2.5 instead of 3.5, I have no idea. But the votes haven't been coming in at the same rate.

Will it bounce back? I'm not sure. It's the best bot to delegate SP to, as it pays back 100% of the SBD used to buy the votes right back to the delegators, as well as some of the curation reward. So we'll see.

For right now, you might actually be able to get a larger vote than usual since less people are using it.

So does that mean boomerang is now "grumpy cat compliant" and he won't downvote those posts anymore?

Yep

I'm not sure why @boomerang restricted themselves to a 2.5 day post age for voting eligibility either. This considerably limits the number of users that would utilize the service. @booster is the only other voting service with such a constraint. The rest are 3 days or higher.

I have no problem with limiting the post age, but the voting services should be free to determine this of their own accord and not be pressured into it. If the platform itself allows votes up to seven days after users publish them, then the issue is the rules of the platform.

It seems the Witnesses and Steemit Inc aren't doing anything about changing the rules of the platform for all users, so Grumpy Cat and other whales have taken matters into their own hands. Meanwhile, there is nothing to stop whales from up-voting themselves and reaping the benefits. What a conundrum.

Yeah I agree 100%. Strange situation. I think these issues will eventually get worked out, at least I hope so. It's definitely the wild west right now, and I think the problem is that there is no real algorithm-based answer that has gained acceptance enough to be potentially included in an upcoming hardfork.

It's been a few weeks since your post and I just thought I'd offer a few more comments given some observations I've made.

I've noticed that Boomerang has not been actively posting updates to delegators - there used to be a post once a week to summarize the weekly curation reward distribution. I'm not sure why the communication has fizzled.

I would also argue that to be competitive with other bots, the maximum post age should be increased from 2.5 days to 3.5 days. With nearly 600K SP delegated to boomerang now, it makes sense to equalize the competitive playing field with other voting services and give users more options. The 2.5 day constraint limits this and there is no reason for it when 3.5 days is sufficient to be compliant with the Grumpy Cat initiative.

Just not sure how to get this across to Boomerang. Thoughts?

Yeah i agree 100%. At this point i can't seem to find any better passive steem investments so I'm just sticking with boomerang for now. If you ever find something with a better return let me know. Right now I'm delegating 4300 sp or so, getting 5-6 sbd a day.

GRUMPY cat has to be berniesanders.. I'm sure there will be changes coming to the BETA platform. Unless there really is no plan for the next stage. Upvote bots are my only avenue squeezing out some profit. Unlike some dolphins that were smart and got into the game, I started from 0. I'm doing ok, but that's only because of upvote bots.

hahahahahaha yeah you're probably right.

i don't think there is much of a plan, honestly. there is basically smt's and then...i dunno. It's hard to even find info about the next hard fork, and any plans for any future hard forks. We basically have these 20 witnesses who get to run the show, which is fine, but they seem either very quiet or very uninterested in any significant changes to the platform.

The Witnesses seem too busy promoting their own projects to even address substantive questions about the foundational underpinnings of the blockchain and oft stated ideas about enhancing the user experience on Steemit to discourage reward pool abuse.

Take for example the broken peg of SBDs to the US dollar. The market has clearly demonstrated over the past two months that this peg experiment is nonsensical in light of natural supply and demand pressures, yet when I asked two prominent Witnesses about it I didn't get a response as to what the next steps are to address this.

yeah i wrote a post that discusses this - there never was a 'peg' and the whole concept of sbd is highly questionable to begin with.

The peg is nonsensical in every sense. It's unfortunate that the powers that be haven't properly represented the nature of SBDs. The marketing of the blockchain is entirely obscured by evident branding discrepancies like this.

SBDs are likely in demand due to their impending correlation to Smart Media Tokens. Per the SMT white paper: "Initially smt_creation_fee will be set to 1 SBD and no means will be provided to update it."

What a disappointment with the boomerang issues. I was planning on delegating to them next to earn more. I am still on the fence with giving my pass key to smartsteem or minnowbooster but I heard they give much higher returns. I guess that is the risk versus rewards.

smartsteem is not higher than boomerang. i think it's lower, actually. im not sure about minnowbooster. but imho boomerang is still #1.

Thanks for sharing! I'm still new to Steemit and don't know much about vote bots yet. Do you have any updates on the average/estimated ROI?

Same as two hours ago lol

I use samartsteem vote sell. It not delegation

What kinda returns you looking at?

it not a delegation. So you can power down and still make money. You basically give them your voting key using steemconnect and you can set how much to use before you voting depletes. You set it to only vote when voting power is 95%. You can cancel anytime. And since it not delegation you still have full use of your steempower

You're so nice for commenting on this post. For that, I gave you a vote! I just ask for a Follow in return!
