I want to host a series of debates on Steem. If it gets popular, I will reward the best argument on both sides. The first debate question is, "Do you support building a wall across most of the US/Mexico border?". Please respond with "Yes" or "No" first, and then give us your argument.

Sort:

The border is already secure. You can't leave if they don't want you too. A border secure enough to keep them out is also secure enough to keep you in.

My country is the world. I have a World Passport. So what country are you going to try deporting me too??? Getting the World Passport solves this wall problem. We have inalienable rights NOT civil rights. Just because I live in the USSA or as I call it "Corporate Fascist America," doesn't mean I'm a citizen of any state. No blood on my hands. I refuse to participate in this lawless tyrannical corporation that has invaded my country known as the United States. For I am stateless. I am Sovereign. Free men don't have no government issued form of identification. Do no harm but stand your ground.

Even though I support building the wall, I think you have produced a decent argument. Thank you for your point-of-view and the effort you have made in this response.

Our Purpose

Thanks so much. I appreciate the support. Hopefully a few people will share some ideas about the border wall.

I support the wall. I think the US will get a return on the investment, by significantly slowing down drug trafficking. The Mexicans will benefit from a decrease in gang violence on their side of the border. Even if a wall cost $25 billion, it would last over 100 years, and a reduction of cost for maintaining prisons, welfare, and social security for illegals, would offset the construction costs. Just from an economic standpoint, it's cheaper to build a wall, then support illegals over multiple several generations. I don't think all Mexicans are against the wall. They want safety and security as well.

One thousand percent, I support a wall. While the mexican government waggles their finger at us for our desire to maintain borders, they jail central-americans who enter Mexico illegally and subject them to forced labor. I'm happy with the US paying for the wall, but would prefer that Mexico pay for it, through taxation on all cash remittances (Western Union) to Mexico, plus increased visa fees on mexican visitors, plus the levying of reciprocal tariffs. With Trump in office, it has felt like Christmas every day, ever since his inauguration.

I say we just pay for it, and get it done. The cost of building a wall is peanuts compared to the economic consequences of inaction over the next 100 years. Trump is our best hope to get it done, but we need to force him to speed up the process.

The interesting thing about this spending bill he just signed, based upon what I understand, is that it is an omnibus bill, which does not bind the president to spend the money stipulated in the bill (i.e.: 500bn for planned parenthood, etc), unlike a "budget or spending bill".

Yes. Illegal immigration is a big problem. Some may argue that immigrants built the country, but you just cannot let everyone in else you risk destroying that fabric. While everyone has a right to chase the American dream, it should be done in a way and manner that benefits the American Society. Opening the doors wide has let in, I dare say, more bad than good people. Therefore a wall should be built, not to stop immigrants, but to ensure that those coming in will contribute meaningfullying to society.

I think you have to earn the right to become an immigrant, and it has to be based upon sustainable quotas. If you follow the rules, and you respect the country, you should at least have the opportunity to apply to become an immigrant, but we should get to decide who we want into the country.

Yes, I support the wall.

It is said this is a country of migrants, as if that is a blanket assessment of all migrants. The fact is cultures have produced significantly different levels of discovery and technology. They try to make it seem as if it is a racial insult to state the facts, but the facts are the facts. Their argument for no borders, welcome all would be more persuasive if we saw the majority of migrants coming here integrating into the existing culture/framework. But many are not, instead insisting we shed the culture that made us great and become like the culture they fled from. I say build the wall, and if immigrants want to talk of how much better their culture is they can be sent back so they can quit living under such horrifying conditions. They must feel trapped being around all this oppression they seek to change. *sarcasm

Liberals will use the EPA, and environmental impact assessments to slow it down. Here's a good example.

Looks like it is time to do an assessment on the impact illegal border crossers are having on the disturbance of these butterflies. And, based on my own experiences, butterflies learned to adjust to walls in areas I have lived in throughout my life.

If used correctly they could leave areas like this open to create a bottleneck area to capture them as they cross. Sentence them to community labor (building the wall) and a pat on the head and back home they go.

I'm an environmentalist, but i'm not worried. The environment impact will be minimal. It will be probably less than a dirt road. At least with a wall, there is no road kill. When you factor in the decrease supply for drugs, some habitats will gain protection. Less people will be clearing the forest to grow marijuana.

You could also make a deal with environmentalist. Use some of the money that would be saved from welfare, and put it towards retrofitting ageing nuclear power plants. Use the savings to help deal with real environmental threats.

Build it. We need less criminals and people sucking out funds that are rightfully the PEOPLE's. While we have bases in nearly country, troops and ships and assets spread across the globe... I say we use our military for defense, have THEM guard the wall so it's actually effective.. Thanks for keeping the convo going :) Glad to see so many woke people in the comments !
