I admire the courage you had to change your life. Getting out of our comfort zone is a painful experience at first but indeed turns out to be the right thing if we persevere.
I personally find mindfulness meditation as the best way to reduce stress. Even with short sessions and ideally in the morning and evening. Morning to start a relax and positive day. Evening to ease your mind for a good night sleep.

Absolutely agree. Meditation is such a powerful tool. My biggest problem is getting too caught up in everything that needs to get done that I fail to make time for it. However working in the garden is in itself quite meditative.
Right. You can well meditate by gardening or walking. Sitting with the legs crossed is just another form. I think one of the main advantage of sitting for meditation is stillness. Reach the state of you no longer feeling your body as you stopped moving completely, with your mind fully focused on your breathing.
