The world is not binary, but grayscale. While 30% of the British citizens in the American colonies may have supported the idea of secession, less than 10% actually acted to make it happen. Of the remainder, most were loyal to their King, and some didn't care one way or the other.
That's a pretty good rule of thumb regarding any drastic paradigm shift. Most don't want to change, even if they are being harmed (within limits, of course), many either don't know, don't care, or don't have a preference (about a third), and of those that want to see the change, less than a third of them will take action to make it happen.
It is that 10% that change the world. People like you, and me - and I'm not so sure about me!
