I enjoyed lots of long walks as a child. We would walk into town to buy candy at the little grocery store next to the feed store. I thought we were so independent, but as an adult I learned Granny called our cousin who lived at the halfway point. This cousin was always out working in her yard when we passed (coincidence?) and would then go inside to phone Granny and let her know what time to expect us home. That is how we lived without cell phones.
