So, the quiz question is, "How did he know? Did he just guess?"
And the answer to "did he just guess" is "no". the answer to "how did he know?" is that he opened all the bags and counted them.
He didn't need to, though, because unca scrooge had given him the information he needed to say exactly. there were 13 bags with 13 coins each. Because he knew that if he knew how many coins there were total, he'd know the other information, and if he knew there were 169 coins, in order for each bag to have the same number of coins, they'd all have to have 13 coins, and there'd have to be 13 bags of them. 11^2 is too small and 17^2 is too big
