No pics in this post, but if you're a permaculturist, homesteader, or gardener, this one could be really worth the read.
I'm coming up on the final installment of my homestead investment money for a while. After that, the money I've been spending the last little bit is going to savings. That's been the plan all along, and I'm about to have to make a new plan for homestead spending money... Yikes.
I need help
The next bit of money is going to plants. I want goji berries next, and I haven't the slightest idea where to buy them. I'd like something I can put in the ground now, not grow from seed. I'd like to get something started asap, even if it won't produce this season.
So.
By the end of this post, I'll have some steem built up. I'm somewhere around 2.5-3 steem right now, and earning 0.5-1.5 steem a day. Meaning I'll have around 7-14 steem by the time this post pays out. This post will pay out two days after my last homestead budget allotment.
To be modest and cautious...
At least 5 SBI shares to the person that recommends the place that I buy goji plants from.
I'm not gonna promise a prize that's more than I think I'll be able to afford. I'm also not promising 100% of my steem to go to SBI, but it's a definite possibility. I love buying SBI shares, I have like 150 of the things.
Recommendation must be made here on this post, and I prefer someone that you've had good experiences with before!
Resteems and upvotes help all involved, seeing as how this post payout will go to the reward for the winner.
I intend to buy 3 or 4 goji plants, as well as some other stuff for around the homestead. Chicken feed, screws, water hoses, etc. But the berry plants are the part I'm hung up on. I'll have $100.
Hell, I may buy another IBC tote too. I have an idea...
So there you have it. Bunches of SBI shares for a recommendation of where to buy goji berry plants.
Thanks, good luck, and stay relevant!
Nate
I dont think of be much help. I got mine from Bunnings here in South Australia! 😆
Do they have free two day shipping to Texas with Amazon prime? 😂😂😂
What zone are you in? I have a VERY vigorous bush with many extras I could send ya. Zone 6b here
Northern edge of zone 8a in Texas.
How much do you want for them? :D
Looks like they might not even reach dormancy here since we're so far within their hardiness range. Some places say they're good down to -10°F! We're like 30 above that at our coldest.
Hey @nateonsteemit I found your contest on the GHSC discord. I bought some goji berries from these guys in the spring. http://rootofdavidnursery.com/index.html. Disclaimer, give the goji berries something to climb on and you have to do something to protect them from insects. I got 2 of them and the bugs have been destroying them. I've been using some diatomaceous earth but haven't kept it up well and the insects kinda devastated them.
Oh no! What kinds of bugs? Feasible to plant them near a chicken run to help control insects?
I'm not sure what got after them but they ate all the leaves off the two of them I got. I think they may come back, but I'm not sure.
Yeesh! That's no fun at all!
Says they're insect resistant, but I guess that's only some insects. That sucks!
Did they fruit the first year?
No they have not fruited, I'm putting more diatomaceous earth around them for pest control and planning to feed the roots with some of the solid fish waste that comes off the aquaponics system. Hopefully that will start to turn them around.
kk, sorry nate, I have to redact my last statement. One of the gojiberry plants has some tiny fruits growing from what I saw the other day. I'll send you a pic tomorrow. The other one is still struggling. Now that my Aquaponics system is running though I can feed the plants some of the fish waste which is an incredible fertilizer.
Is it feasible to grow the gojis in the aquaponics system?
It may be feasible in a wicking bed. I would believe would work well for sure. Not sure it would work well in a pebble media bed or deep water culture type system. If I could get some to propagate from cuttings I will definitely try though.
I owed you a photo of the one goji berry I bought from my source. Here is the current status of one of them I planted next to a thornless blackberry I also bought from the same folks.
Little one! I hear they get 7 feet high and almost that big around.
I'm contemplating getting a lot. Found a guy that propogates them and sells them in packs of 30. I need 30 goji berry plants, right? Right? 🤔
Have you checked with your local nurseries?
That's where I'm going on Tuesday to see if they have them or can get them. If that ends up being where I go, you'll win for being the first to recommend it :)
We buy/order quite a few fruit trees/shrubs every year, but mostly in the spring. I usually go nursery hopping to see what everyone has. Getting it from a local nursery is usually the best especially if they propagate them there because the prices are better and they are less likely to be root bound. If you buy online, buy bare root plants to keep from getting root bound plants. They also tend to be less expensive.
Ebay ... get them delivered to your door.
100 seeds for just around $2

I know that's the cheapest option, but I don't want to mess with seeds for these. I want a head start.
